Sapping Self-Confidence

Are you sapping your spouse’s self-confidence and creating problems in your marriage? Recently I experienced an example of how negativity and negative comments can affect performance. It was on the tennis court. I was not playing with Mick since he’s not back to tennis yet since his health problems and would never have behaved like this anyway. The person I partnered in one set was so negative that an air of tension pervaded the court. I was all the time conscious of the negative vibes coming from my partner. The result was I became tentative in my shot making, found … Continue reading

Is Your Favorite Sport Putting You at Risk for Injury?

Health experts (as well as government officials) are constantly trying to motivate people to get moving. They want couch potatoes to get up and walk, run, enroll in an aerobics class, join a bowling league, play tennis, etc. However, doctors are now saying that if the right precautions are not taken, the amateur sports that experts want people to participate in can have unexpected long-term health risks. A new study conducted by a leading occupational therapist found that when leisure activities are not done properly they can have negative effects on the musculoskeletal system. According to the study, in the … Continue reading

Tennis For Two? Or Four?

Sound like fun? Tennis can be a great way to dive into springtime fitness because you can do it with a friend, with a spouse, with a friend and a spouse or with the whole family. Tennis courts are pretty accessible, I know a lot of places in my local area that have free tennis courts so all you need to show up with is your racket and some tennis balls. Not Steffi Graf I’m not Steffi Graf either, but you don’t have to be to enjoy a solid game of tennis. In fact, I think it’s more fun when … Continue reading

Wii Love Bowling!

This past Christmas, we got our daughter a Nintendo Wii. I’ve actually been interested in getting one for more than a year, but besides being among the hardest to find game systems out there, it was also a little more of an expense than I felt like I needed to devote to myself, but after we got one for our nephew as a huge family gift, my daughter went crazy for it. When she wrote her letter to Santa, she asked for just six things and one of those was a Nintendo Wii. What Wii Love When I first wrote … Continue reading

Words of Encouragement

Since moving and after getting my arm out of plaster, I have joined tennis club. Being competitive by nature, I am pleased that the people in this tennis club are all players of a good standard, who enjoy the strategy and competitiveness of tennis. It may be social but everyone is out on the court to win the game. That’s not to say that it is not carried on in an attitude of sportsmanship and friendliness. It is common for those on the opposite side of the net to acknowledge a good shot and offer words of encouragement. Today on … Continue reading

Andre Agassi Takes A Swing At His Wife

Calm down. It’s not what you think. Unless you are thinking that one of the world’s greatest tennis players whacked his wife in the face with a tennis racket—by accident! Accidents do happen… but when you happen to make one in front of thousands of people, don’t be surprised to see it end up in newspapers the next day. It’s a lesson Andre Agassi learned Sunday after he inadvertently hit his tennis star wife Steffi Graf in the face with a racket. According to news reports, the incident happened while the couple was rallying gently with two children during a … Continue reading

Tennis Star Turned Nun

She used to be known as the “brat of the women’s tennis tour,” now she’s known as Sister Andrea. Sometimes miracles do happen. At least that’s what those close to Andrea Jaeger believe. Twenty-five years ago Jaeger was the No. 2 women’s tennis player in the world. She was a hot commodity and didn’t let people forget it. She had a reputation for screaming at linesmen and was standoffish to competitors. Fast forward to the present and you’ll find the former tennis star wearing a traditional habit, surrounded by a group of young cancer survivors in the halls of Cincinnati … Continue reading

Marriage Partners Can Equal Fitness Partners

I write for the marriage blog as well as the fitness blog and the following could actually be placed in either blog. I elected for here in fitness because we talk about parents motivating their kids and working on improving their kids’ fitness all the time. It’s equally important to work on maximizing your spouse’s fitness because in turn, they can help you maximize yours. Marriage is: A contractually committed partnership, including sexual love, cohabitation, shared economy/property and mutual childrearing; socially approved and legally acknowledged emotional, sexual, and economic relationship between two or more individuals The definition of marriage that … Continue reading

Tennis Star Hopes Hotel Is A Hit

You’ve heard of the countless celebrities who have opened their own restaurants. And, even of the famous movie star who is in the process of trying to create his own airport. But, it’s not everyday that you hear that a legendary sports icon-make that two legendary sports icons-are in the final stages of developing a hotel. It’s true. Just days after retiring from the world of professional tennis (his emotional final appearance last week at the U.S. Open made me tear up), Andre Agassi is “serving up” a new travel venture. According to local newspapers, Agassi, along with his equally … Continue reading

Andre Agassi to Retire

Wow, time really flies! It seems like only yesterday, I had the poster of young Andre Agassi, blonde hair flowing as he was swinging the tennis racket, hanging up in my room. Okay, maybe it was about 15 years ago because Agassi, now 36, just announced the he would retire after this year’s U.S. Open. Andre was, to me at least, the first rock star tennis player. He had the rock star hair, the shades, an earring, and a brash attitude. But then he was born in one of the flashiest cities in the world – Las Vegas. He was … Continue reading
