Thank Goodness: The Plug is Pulled on the Bill Gates/Jerry Seinfeld Commercials

I don’t know if you have seen the recent ads for Microsoft, but it involved Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. I was in the computing field back when Bill Gates was just another name in the industry, but I’ve always had an opinion of him. Although horribly successful in his field (as is Apple co-founder Steve Jobs), I’ve always imagined that Bill had to be a total geek to do all he’s done. And, being a geek, he probably lacks in personality and social skills (but I am sure his billions make up for it.) It appears that someone decided … Continue reading

What to Do with Old Windows

Reusing what you have is usually a sure bet to save money. Some things have obvious reuses, such as paper bags from the grocery store, while others may be a bit obscure, such as what to do with a bunch of leftover allen wrenches. One item that keeps coming up in reuse questions is the old window. This may be the year that we replace our old drafty single pane windows with insulating double pane ones. Just throwing the windows away could cost us two times. The first is the cost to dispose of the windows, either through the window … Continue reading

Frugal Curtain Tiebacks

Here is a frugal (cheap) way to get some nice new metal tie backs for you curtains at bout 1/12th of the cost. We’ve finally given up on being able to redesign our living room and dining room this year and have started to put the old existing curtains back up on the windows. To be honest, they really aren’t bad curtains, although they don’t exactly match with the colors on the respective walls. One thing that is hard to get used to is having curtains on these windows at all. That is because we spent the entire summer without … Continue reading

Turning Your Car Windshield into a Desktop?

Microsoft recently submitted a patent application for a very interesting application that appears to be a way of turning your car windshield into a sort of computer desktop. The patent application calls the device an “Adaptive heads-up user interface for automobiles.” The application also includes some drawings that clearly represent an automobile windshield that contains a sort of overlaid interface. Icons are situated around the perimeter of the windshield, on the left side and bottom, specifically. Crave at CNET.com has plunged through all of the complicated wording and say, “we managed to glean that the engineers who came up with … Continue reading

Fusing Windows into The Mac

In my usual disclaimer I have to say that I am very partial to Macs. Their superior operating system and easy of use just make Macs a great machine. More and more people are starting to agree with me, as sales of the Mac are growing by leaps and bounds. Mac computers are still only a small percentage of all PC sales, though, and I think that may partially be due to the fact that the majority of software out in the world is written for Windows-based machines. Sure, there are some Mac versions of popular software, mostly in the … Continue reading

Are Medical Transcriptionists Going the Way of Dinosaurs?

This blog is part of a series on transcription. If you haven’t read the other blogs in this series, make sure to check out the summary page for a listing of all transcription blogs. Are medical transcriptionists going the way of the dinosaurs? The short answer is most definitely not. The long answer is, well, longer. 😛 Several years ago, I learned about medical transcription, and thought, “Well, that’s a pretty easy job–all you have to do is type what the doctor says.” After studying to become an MT for 18 months at Career Step, I have to say: It’s … Continue reading

Frugal Spring Cleaning: Washing Windows

Want to make your house sparkle inside and out? Spring cleaning doesn’t require expensive products. with the following advice, you can wash your windows the frugal way! Our new home is in some serious need of spring cleaning. As my sister-in-law said, there was probably about 20 years worth of dirt layered on everything from the previous owners. One thing that made a big difference right away was cleaning the windows. It was amazing how much light started streaming in and how much better the view was. We have great views of our wooded property, so it was a shame … Continue reading

Two Words You Don’t Want to Hear: Spring Cleaning!

It’s Spring! Yes, that means Easter and flowers and warm afternoons, but it also means time to rub and scrub, shine and design, and dust, fuss, and straighten. Time to get rid of clutter and cobwebs and to make your home sparkle and smell as fresh as the great outdoors. So, are you ready? I have to admit, I’m not. I can handle opening windows and airing out the months of cooped-up-ness but I hate the actual cleaning part. I don’t like having dirt under my nails. I don’t like dusting ceilings or washing walls or moving furniture to scrub … Continue reading

Non-standard Doorways and Windows

Determining how you should dress non-standard windows and doorways requires a bit of creativity. Arched doorways and windows, and other different shapes give a home a lot of character, but a hexagonal or rounded shape can leave you wondering how to treat the opening. While you can create treatments that fit the shape, doing so tends to be a little awkward. For windows, it’s usually best to leave the top area open and simply run a curtain rod straight across at the first area in which there are parallel lines, or in other words, just below the rounded or hexagonal … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Clean your window sills

Ok, I admit it. I’m not exactly a neat freak. I wear multiple hats, including mother to young children, and the last thing I want to do each day is clean my house. The basics get done (most of the time) and the rest just sort of sits there until there is a compelling enough reason for me to care about taking care of them. One of those things that I never get around to is my window sills. This is partly because I have designated my 6 and 8 year old boys as the window washers in the family. … Continue reading
