The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

Although “The Karate Kid Part II” was released two years after the first “Karate Kid,” it begins just shortly after the competition that marks the final scene of the first movie. As Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) are leaving the stadium, they see a disturbing sight. Johnny, Daniel’s old enemy, has come in second in the karate competition, and that’s just not good enough for John Kreese, his sensai. Mr. Kreese begins beating Johnny up, to teach him a lesson, and even though the other boys step in and try to stop him, he is relentless. Mr. … Continue reading

The Princess of Thieves (2001)

We all know the story of Robin Hood and his merry men, how they stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and fought against Prince John and his evil henchman, the Sheriff of Nottingham. We also know how Robin fell in love with Maid Marion. “The Princess of Thieves” takes us on another fantastical journey – what if Robin and Marion had a daughter? Keira Knightly stars as Gwyn, daughter to Robin Hood. The Sheriff of Nottingham still has it in for Robin Hood and has sworn a bounty on the head of any offspring Robin might have, … Continue reading

The Incredibles (2004)

Imagine a world where superheros are the norm, where it’s quite common to see three or four in the course of your day. In “The Incredibles,” that’s just how things are, or rather, how they were. Once upon a time, there was a superhero for every occasion, and evildoers had no chance. But one day, Mr. Incredible saved the life of a man who was trying to commit suicide, and that man decided to sue. Things went downhill from there, and soon all the supers had to go into hiding. Mr. Incredible and his wife, Elastigirl, became Robert and Helen … Continue reading

Love is Not a Feeling

If you asked someone what love was, what kind of a response would you get? Answers would probably vary widely, but many people would say that love is somehow related to a feeling. When you fell in love with your spouse you likely felt a strong emotional attachment to him. You thought about him constantly or felt a surge of excitement when you were about to see him after a long separation. Are these wonderful feelings that our culture is so infatuated with the same thing as love? Undoubtedly, love can be related to feelings of emotional connection or need. … Continue reading

Hercules (1997)

Released in June of 1997, “Hercules” is the 35th animated movie in the Disney line-up and has become one of the most popular. With a storyline loosely based on Greek mythology, it’s a surefire hit, right? Well, it was with most people, but not with me. I’ll explain why later. For a description of the film: Little baby Hercules was born to doting parents Zeus and Hera. His natural destiny is to be a god on Mount Olympus, but through a strange turn of events that you’ll just have to watch the movie to see, his divinity is taken from … Continue reading

Calamity Jane (1953)

“Calamity Jane” is the story of a girl (Doris Day) who doesn’t quite know she’s a girl. She has dressed in buckskins her whole life, knows how to shoot better than most men, can lasso, ride, and drink just like a man. But beneath all that bravado beats the very real heart of a woman – she’s in love with Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey, who later went on to play Asa Buchanan on “One Live to Live.”) After all, didn’t she ride in and save him from a band of Indians? But no matter what she does, she just … Continue reading

The Books of Dick Francis

Those of you who joined us yesterday for the author review on Dick Francis know what a unique and varied life he has led. But Dick didn’t just leave it at jockeying and fighting in the war – he does a copious amount of research into each book, giving you the feeling that he knows every aspect of every hero inside and out, from painting to glass blowing to chasing tornadoes. Each of Dick’s books is full of adventure and drama. As my dad once commented to me, the heroes always seem to find themselves in situations where they have … Continue reading

The Grocery Store

The grocery store can often be a very frustrating and stressful place. Children running mad in the aisles while mothers are trying to find the best deal, college students busy chatting away on their cell phones not paying attention to anyone around, and of course, the slow shopper who always seems to be in the way. I usually feel exhausted after even a short trip to the grocery store, and I do not even have children yet! I can only imagine how other shoppers feel. I have mentioned before that one of the ways Christians can share Christ with those … Continue reading

Fitness Lists of Ten ( Part I)

It’s time for another List of 10. Today’s list of 10 looks at the top 10 things I love about Springtime. You might think this is an easy list to generate, but I poured careful thought and consideration into this list. After all, springtime comes only once a year and it’s a good time to clean house and get fitness back in your priority list. Statistics show that over 50% of the people who made a resolution in January to lose weight or exercise more have quit their programs by March. So, it’s time for the March, spring into action … Continue reading
