Animal Victories in 2010

As we close out 2010, let’s look at some great end of the year news for animals. The ASPCA has released a list of their legislative victories from the past year. The majority of the laws passed are by individual state governments, but there was one successful federal bill signed into law by President Obama on December 9. In April animal rights received a blow when the Supreme Court invalidated an 11-year-old law called The Crush Act. The act banned videos depicting the sick practice of crushing; the name itself refers to when a woman in high heels would step … Continue reading

More “Bad Newz” for Michael Vick (With Hopefully More to Come)

Michael Vick should have stuck to football instead of getting involved in dogfighting. After all, football was his claim to fame. The 2001 number one draft pick who last year made history as the first quarterback to ever rush over 1,000 yards is now making history for something much less admirable. In fact, it’s downright despicable. Dogfigthing. It all started back in May when suspicions of dogfighting operations on his property came to light. What investigators found was simply awful. Dogs that had been killed in the most inhumane ways possible: hanged, electrocuted, shot, and even slammed to death on … Continue reading

Bob Barker Pays To House Elephant

What’s that saying: “If you’ve got it–spend it.” While other celebrities are donating money to poor children in Africa, their alma maters, and victims of natural disasters one popular game show host is pledging hundreds of thousands of dollars to his pet cause—animals. “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker says he will pledge $300,000 toward housing an elephant from the Los Angeles Zoo in an animal sanctuary. Barker’s publicist told news reporters the donation would match other monetary contributions made in support of sending Ruby, a 45-year-old African elephant, to a sanctuary in San Andreas in Northern California. Currently, … Continue reading

The ASPCA: Celebrating 140 Years!

April 10th marked the one hundred and fortieth anniversary of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I read up on the history of the organization and was amazed at what I found! The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh, a man who came to be known around New York City as “The Great Meddler”. He was a diplomat who first became involved in fighting inhumanity toward animals while overseas at a post in Russia. In 1866, Bergh created the ASPCA and was given the right to enforce anti-cruelty laws by the state of New York. Bergh … Continue reading

Animal Cruelty in the News

I’ve seen a lot of sad stories lately about animals being treated with extreme cruelty. I won’t go into graphic detail here, and I won’t post pictures. I’ve seen the pictures, and they are very upsetting. But I also believe that hiding from the stories isn’t going to help anyone. In Washington State, a puppy called Mooie was burned to death with acid. At this time, the persons responsible have not been caught. In Michigan, animal control officers took two dogs from a family that had allowed their sons to cut off the dogs’ ears. The boys had heard that … Continue reading
