Hero Dog Dies During Rescue

Just when you thought the days of amazing Lassie-like rescues had gone the way of black-and-white TV—this incredible story surfaces. It is the talk of our town, and if I hadn’t seen the coverage myself I would have been reluctant to believe it. A woman who lives about a 35 minutes from our home in Wisconsin is alive today because of the heroic efforts of her dog. The woman was on the news a couple of nights ago and you could barely make out what she was trying to say through her tears. The woman, Jamie Hanson, was at home … Continue reading

German Shepherd Saves Toddler

If you don’t live in the Philadelphia area, you may have missed the story of Alfie, a German Shepherd who followed his boy across the roofs of eight homes! Young Phillip, just shy of his second birthday, apparently climbed out of a broken bedroom window and onto the roof of his family’s home. Alfie the German Shepherd followed his boy out onto the roof of the row home and across the porch rooftops of at least eight homes. Neighbors who saw the boy and dog on the roof said that they were alerted to the situation by Alfie’s barking. Finally, … Continue reading

Belle the Beagle Saves Owner!

A beagle-loving friend of mine sent me the story of Belle, a beagle who saved her owner’s life. Owner Kevin Weaver is a diabetic. Beagle Belle is specially trained to detect abnormalities in her owner’s blood sugar levels, and summon help in an emergency. Her training paid off when Kevin had a seizure and collapsed as a result of low blood sugar: Belle bit into his cell phone to call 911. Now Belle is the first canine recipient of a VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, an award given to people who use cell phones to save a life, prevent a crime, … Continue reading

Flint, Michigan’s Newest Hero

Pit bulls have a bad reputation. If you hear about them in the news, it’s usually because something bad has happened. But this time, something great has happened! Very early in the morning on Thursday April 13th, a pit bull woke up her family because their house was on fire. She whimpered and whined until all three family members woke up and evacuated the house. Local officials believe that the fire started in the basement. The home’s hot water heater or furnace seems to have ignited a pile of clothing. The basement took the worst fire damage, but the first … Continue reading

Hurricane Hero Dog

During all the coverage of Hurricane Katrina, I happened to miss this story: a black lab saved a man from drowning in flooded New Orleans. The dog, now called Katrina, helped pull the drowning man to higher ground. He gives her full credit for saving his life. The story came out from Los Angeles based station KCAL when the rescued man told the tale of his amazing rescue. After the broadcast, the station sent a team back to New Orleans to rescue Katrina. Katrina got a standing ovation on Saturday March 18th at the annual Genesis Awards, from the Humane … Continue reading
