Keeping Pets Warm in Cold Weather

We’ve been having an “arctic blast” here in the Pacific Northwest… and boy has it been COLD! I worry about keeping my dogs warm when we’re out walking — I bundle up with coat, hat, and gloves, but they’re out there in just their fur. My dogs Moose and Lally tolerate wearing clothes reasonably well. So if I were to buy them coats to wear, I think they would be willing to wear them. But booties to protect their feet? No way. A hat to protect their ears? Doubtful. So what can you do to protect your pets from the … Continue reading

Bad Weather and Active Pets

Fall and winter in the Pacific Northwest often means rain. And rain means MUD! There are days I want to walk my dogs in hip boots and a full-length coat (at least I have the coat, in a muddish shade of brown so the splatters don’t show). There are some days I don’t want to leave the house at all. Lally (my boxer mix) is the same way! She’s a funny little girl: she hates the rain, and hates getting wet. On days when the skyfall is constant, it’s hard to get her more than a few steps outside the … Continue reading

Storm Chasers

This year may be one of the deadliest on record as far as tornadoes go, yet people are still fascinated by these storms. While most of us prefer to be as far from a tornado as possible, there are people, known as storm chasers, who actually go hunting for tornadoes. Storm chasers not only capture incredible footage of these destructive storms, but many also help gather important research so we can know more about what makes tornadoes tick. By knowing as much as possible about tornadoes, we can better protect ourselves against them. The very first storm chaser was believed … Continue reading

Holiday Travel Nightmares

In my previous blog Mother Nature vs. Holiday Travelers I discussed how the horrendous winter weather conditions wrecked havoc on millions of Americans trying to get home in time for Christmas. Here in Wisconsin we were slammed with rain, fog, ice, snow, and high winds that created white out conditions. To say it led to travel nightmares is a severe understatement. In fact, last night the local news profiled a family from Bosnia who has been living in the baggage claim area of the Milwaukee airport for past 8 days. In Chicago one couple reportedly spent 3 days in the … Continue reading

Romantic Hurricane Adventures: Fun with Floyd

For me, September brings to mind hurricanes. It all started the year we moved to Florida. The Summer of ‘99 We moved to Jacksonville in May of 1999. Our move had been a bit rocky. Wayne and I had been separated for four months until our house sold in Phoenix. (Actually, it hadn’t even sold yet. I just couldn’t stand not living with him anymore, so I decided I was moving. Luckily we got an offer at the same time.) But I had only been in Jax a month when Wayne’s company declared bankruptcy and laid him off. It could … Continue reading

Tips For Driving In Bad Weather

Earlier I told you that my family is bracing to deal with Hurricane Flossie. Make no mistake; hurricane and tornado season is here and for travelers that means making sure you have emergency plans for a natural disaster. That goes double for those of you who do a lot of driving across the Great Plains and the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. It’s important to know what to do if you forced to drive in severe weather. According to the AAA (and common sense), it’s always better to stay off the roads until inclement weather has passed. But if you absolutely … Continue reading
