Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 Video Game Review

The makers of the Lego series of video games offers Lego Harry Potter for the Wii, a fun bit of entertainment for fans. Covering the Harry Potter years from 1-4, this game combines all of the charm of the Harry Potter world with the creative game play of Lego. There is a good mix of puzzle-solving game play and exploration. The emphasis on battle play, blowing up other Lego character until they fall apart into their individual pieces, is more downplayed than in the previous Lego series, such as Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman. I personally I think this … Continue reading

Mercury Meltdown Revolution Video Game

You know the old “which came first, the chicken or the egg” question? Well, with Mercury Meltdown Revolution (MMR), it might be hard to figure out which came first, MMR or the Wii. The answer is that this very entertaining puzzle game first started out on the PSP, but there was always something missing: tilt control. The Wii video game system brings this tilt control, and the implementation is natural and perfect. Okay, enough gushing about the controls. Let me tell you about the game. If you have ever broken a mercury thermometer, you know how mercury behaves. It is … Continue reading

Review: Boom Blox Video Game

Think of Jenga with beavers. That will give you some idea about the Steven Spielberg game, Boom Blox. Boom Blox sets you in a far off land that would make any cubist proud. Your goal is to manipulate blocks (or blox) by knocking them down, grabbing them, pushing them, exploding them, shooting them, hosing them down, or building with them. This is all in the name of helping out small square animals that gleefully hop up and down when you win and sadly shake their heads when you lose. The characters names are cutsey and include the Bahhs, a sheep … Continue reading

Review: Disney Princess Enchanted Journey Video Game

Let’s face it, there aren’t too many video games out there that are created for girls, especially little girls. That is why we were so excited to spot this game at our local library. We usually check video games for our Wii from the library first. for our Wii. It is a lot less expensive than buying full games only to find that the play value wasn’t worth the money. But even after playing DPEJ, my daughter wanted to check it out again and again, even after solving the game. This game has all of the core princesses, as well … Continue reading

Review: Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga Video Game

When you have an elementary school boy, then chances are pretty good that he is into both Legos and light sabers. Even before seeing the movie, my son was turning paper towel tubes into light sabers. So when we spotted Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga at a local GameStop, I wondered if I would ever get out of the store. Pop-pop came to the rescue, as pop-pops usually do, purchasing the game for number one grandson, along with a few others. Hey, at least they were used and on sale for a buy two get one free day. The … Continue reading

The Wii and Preschoolers

It may surprise you to know that I let my preschooler play video games. In fact, she is pretty good at them. Here is why we have made the Wii available to our four-year-old. When the Wii video game system came out, we thought the craziness surrounding it was completely ridiculous. Why would people practically kill each other trying to be one of the first ones to plunk down a lot of money for a Wii system and then even more money on the games themselves? Well, after much of the hoopla died down (and several friends of ours had … Continue reading
