Sleeping Patterns

My son’s sleeping patterns have been altering a little bit. I notice this because he still sleeps with Mom and Dad (something we really enjoy). It seems that he sleeps less often during the day than he used to when he was less adept at tasks like playing. It makes sense though: why sleep if you can have fun? Last night he had laughing fits with his Mom (and Dad was there to record with the video camera!) and he’s also been sitting up on his own with significantly greater confidence. All of this, perhaps, has led to his lacking … Continue reading

Bees That Will Sweeten Your Marriage

We all know bees make honey. Here are some Bs that will sweeten your marriage. Believe Believe in yourself – you own worth, as well as that of your spouse and your marriage. A positive self image is important. You need to believe you are worthy of being loved and cared for. You also need to show your spouse that you believe in them. That you believe in their abilities and that you believe your marriage is worth putting time and effort into. Bed Bed can be an important place in marriage and one of the things I believe is … Continue reading

Is There a “Best Time” for Bed Time?

One of the parenting topics that come up again and again has to do with bed time. If a parent is not wrestling with a child trying to get her to go to bed, we are trying to get a child to stay in bed. A question that I get asked periodically is whether or not there is a “right” time for bed time? And, if there is anything a parent can do to control when a child goes to bed and how long they sleep? As parents, we can provide structure and reasonable expectations, but there is a certain … Continue reading

A Vacation (Sort of) in Bed

It is Memorial Day weekend—a time when many Americans take mini-vacations to get themselves warmed up for the summer season. My kids, in fact, have gone off for the next three days with their Dad—a rare chance for the four of them to spend time together without interruptions and obligations. This means that I have my little world to myself for the next few days and, like many single parents/home business owners, I have been looking forward to all the work I’ll get done! Typically, however, yesterday afternoon I started to get a scratchy throat and this morning I woke … Continue reading

Getting Up After Going to Bed

Bed time can be a challenge and we often talk here in the Parents’ blog about different ways to make a bedtime routine workable and make bedtime go more smoothly. One of the topics we haven’t really covered is what to do when a child starts getting up after going to bed. When you’ve done everything you can think of to create a consistent bedtime routine and the child pops up after being tucked in or comes up with a dozen reasons to get back out of bed once you’ve got her in there—what can you do? So, what is … Continue reading

Let’s Be Honest, Why Would They Really WANT to Go to Bed?

Wrestling with children over bedtime seems to be the parent’s right of passage or a national pastime of parents. We get so aggravated and agitated and ask ourselves what is wrong with us as parents because our children throw tantrums or don’t want to go to bed. But, let us look at this bed time issue with a little common sense—why on earth would the average child WANT to go to bed?! Life is so full of fun and pleasures and love and interesting new things that it seems to me a child is pretty darn smart to feel like … Continue reading

Toys in Bed

I was talking with a friend, a first-time parent who has a preschooler and she was lamenting about the most recent troublesome development–now that her child is in a “big boy bed”–he is bringing all sorts of his toys into bed with him and falling asleep amidst the big pile. She is concerned it is not only a health and safety concern, but that he is developing bad habits. I hated to seem like that saucy and crusty old mother who couldn’t be fazed, but I have a nearly 18-year-old who STILL likes to have all her books, papers, and … Continue reading

Coping with Midnight Bed Sneakers

I was asked a question by a working mom of three young school-age kids. She wanted to know how she could get her kids to stop “sneaking” into her bed at night. As she explained it, she is such a hard sleeper that when her kids come in, complaining of nightmares or other fears, she is not coherent enough to send them back to their own beds and often doesn’t even realize they are there until she wakes up in the morning. I could definitely relate as my son was one of those midnight sneakers—sometime in the dead of the … Continue reading

Choosing Your Mattress Type: Part 2

In Choosing Your Mattress Type: Part 1, I introduced the four different types of modern mattresses. They are: Traditional Inner Spring Mattress Air Mattress Foam Mattress Waterbed In the previous article, we tackled the first two types. Now it is on to the remaining two types of mattresses; that is, foam mattresses and waterbed mattresses. Foam Mattress A foam mattress operates differently from either an inner spring mattress or an air mattress is that it generally forms one solid surface instead of having an inner support system. There are two type of foam used, regular latex foam or memory foam … Continue reading

Indoor Family Olympics

If the weather is still a bit chilly, or if it’s raining or muddy outside, you can create your very own Indoor Family Olympics! Put your thinking caps on and come up with ideas that while active, silly, and fun, can still be done inside without destroying the house. Balancing Books Each person must make it from the starting point to the finish line with a book on top of his or her head. No hands! If the book falls, stop and put it back on the head, and continue. It’s best to use paperbacks instead of hard covers, so … Continue reading
