Paying with cash can be a very good strategy to help you reduce your spending and therefore live frugally. One problem with cash, though, is that it may not seem as easily organized as those automatic line item receipts or bills that you get with a credit card or a debit card. The Case for Cash

Hardly any of us ever use cash anymore. But if you are frugal, the way you pay just might make a difference in how much you spend. I realized, the other day, how I never seem to pay with cash when I pulled out the credit card to pay for an item that cost less than $2. It seemed sort of silly to me, the fact that I didn’t have a single dollar bill in my…well, billfold. There is a strong case for using cash instead of credit or debit cards when you want to be frugal. Here are some … Continue reading

Winning a Million Dollars–Could This be Your Next Job?

I have come up with a new idea: I am going to enter sweepstakes as a job! Okay, maybe not as a full-time job, but I found a neat site that makes finding sweepstakes a lot easier to do: Online Sweepstakes. They not only list all sweepstakes currently open, but they also break them up into categories like what the prize is, how often you can enter, when the contest expires, and other helpful groupings. For someone who doesn’t have the slightest clue about sweepstakes (like me!), this site really seems jam-packed full of great info. And just in case … Continue reading

My Loves and Hates Around Budgeting

I’ve only been budgeting a short time, so Hubby and I are still feeling our way around. So far, this is what budgeting to me means: Pre- spending your money on paper, before you actually get the cash in hand. Taking a set amount of cash, needed for the week in envelopes. Watching prices at the grocery store. Writing everything down on a daily (hubby) or weekly (hubby and I together) basis to evaluate our financial situation. Sounds easy enough …. NOT! I’m forced to think about things like: What do we want to eat for dinner this week? And … Continue reading

Cash Camps

My 10-year-old niece left for camp yesterday. It is an overnight camp run by the YWCA. She has been attending it each summer since she was 8-years-old. (Personally, I thought that was kind of young for a child to be going to sleep-away camp, but she loved it and hasn’t looked back since.) My niece’s camp is your typical summer camp. She’ll be swimming, canoeing, doing crafts, and making s’mores. Your kids may be attending a summer camp as well. Nowadays there are a seemingly endless amount of camp choices–from Space Camps and Fitness Camps to Bible Camps and Foreign … Continue reading

The Change Jar

In our home as well as many others, we have a jar where we keep all of our spare change. Instead of spending any of the change we have on hand, we only pay in full-dollar amounts. Even if we are charged $20.01, we will pay with twenty-one dollars and save the change. I actually enjoy getting nearly a whole dollar as change to add to our change jar. Especially when we are on a cash-only diet, this change can really add up fast. What to Use it For A change jar can be used as a simple way to … Continue reading
