Is Your Child’s Idol a Loser?

She loved one of her songs, but thankfully, my daughter is not in love with pop sensation Miley Cyrus. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. The former “Hannah Montana” star has legions of young fans, though much to their parents’ chagrin. According to a new poll, 68% of parents say they can’t stand the 19-year-old and wish their children would idolize someone else. Moms and dads claim their displeasure with Cyrus stems from her public transformation from squeaky-clean Disney star to risqué, half-naked punk performer. Joining Cyrus on the list of most unpopular teen role models is another disgraced … Continue reading

PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities

Voting for PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2010 is still open. I read on Facebook that octogenarian Cloris Leachman, apparently not to be outdone by that minx Betty White, is currently one of the forerunners in the contest. Who will 2010’s winners join as sexy vegetarian celebrities? Newly single Shania Twain won in 2001, the first year the contest was held. Shania said she became vegetarian when she married her ex, Mutt Lange. At least she took something good away from the marriage. In 2002, PETA decided to have a sexiest male and female vegetarian celebrity. The male honors went … Continue reading

A Middle-Grade Novel to Skip

There is a dearth of adoption stories, either fiction or non-fiction, for kids in between the picture book stage and the young-adult novel stage. So it’s doubly disappointing that the latest one I read perpetuates old stereotypes. Trophy Kid, or How I Was Adopted by the Rich and Famous is by Steve Atinsky. We hear a lot nowadays about celebrities adopting. Atinsky did have a creative idea to look at what a 13-year-old son of movie stars (one of whom is a political candidate) thinks of his adoption ten years later. Jozef Francis (Joe) was orphaned by the fighting in … Continue reading

Belly Photos: Public or Private?

I recently read that Gisele Bundchen had her pregnant belly airbrushed out of her fashion photo shoots because her pregnancy was “too sacred” to share with the world. What a striking statement to make in contrast to the very public belly (and body) baring photos that have been featured on magazine covers by celebrities like Britney Spears, Demi Moore, and Christina Aguilera. Showing off your pregnant belly is the norm these days, not hiding it. All you have to do is do a Google image search for “pregnant” and you’ll find thousands of women, not just celebrities, showing off their … Continue reading

Celebrity Marathon Runners

Celebrities were out in full force in New York today. Not for a movie premiere or an awards show; rather, a handful of determined stars were sweating it out in the Big Apple for the 2008 New York City Marathon. This year’s biggest celeb finisher was actor Ryan Reynolds. Scarlett Johansson’s better half crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 50 minutes—-better than the four-hour target he was aiming for. “I’m still standing. I’m very excited about that,” Reynolds told reporters after finishing the 26.2-mile course. “It was an incredible experience.” Unlike some other race participants who entered to test … Continue reading

Ed McMahon Losing his Home?

We all know how rough the economy has been lately, with gas prices skyrocketing and housing sales plummeting. Now it seems as if the crunch is even hitting celebrities. Ed McMahon has admitted that his Beverly Hills home is facing possible foreclosure. Ed, who is 85, appeared on “Larry King Live” and said that he and his wife Pam are $644,000 behind on their mortgage. What happened to the man that was a staple on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson for 30 years? Not to mention he was the host of “Star Search” for 20 years, plus the spokesman … Continue reading

Lindsay Lohan: Is She or Isn’t She?

In case you haven’t noticed lately, Lindsay Lohan has been hanging out with popular Los Angeles DJ Samantha Ronson. The two have been almost inseparable for the past year or so. However, for months now, there has been speculation that Lohan and Ronson are more than friends. The two showed for the party on Diddy’s yacht at Cannes last week. They were affectionate all night, holding hands. Some say, like Lindsay’s mom, says they are just close friends. In fact, Dina, in a PEOPLE interview, called Samantha a sweetheart and said, “She’s great – and she’s the best spinner around.” … Continue reading

Sharon Stone Apologizes for“Karma” Comment

Is it something in the water? This week, more so than usual, there seems to be an overabundance of celebrities who are opening practicing the old “mouth and inserting foot” technique. After Hulk Hogan and family spoke ill of the young man gravely injured in a car wreck in which their son was driving, now Sharon Stone has said maybe the Chinese are just getting what was coming to them. What? Did Sharon Stone actually insinuate that the horrendous earthquake China just had and all the suffering the people are going through was a result of “bad karma” for its … Continue reading

Iconic Sex Symbols – Part 2

The other day, I blogged about three actors that were so sexy in their time – Mel Gibson, Warren Beatty, and Paul Newman. But, there are still plenty more to talk about! Elvis Presley I could just write 50 blogs about Elvis and why a young Elvis was so, so sexy. Yes, like many that grew up in the show biz spotlight, Elvis seemed to have had some personality flaws. But, I dare you to find one single physical fault with Elvis of the 50s or even 60s. When Elvis first hit the scene, it was he who originally drove … Continue reading

A Look at Patrick Wayne

Sometimes I’m not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. I’ve seen Patrick Wayne here and there my entire life, mostly with small parts on shows such as “Fantasy Island” and “The Love Boat.” I remember him best for hosting the game show “Tic Tac Dough.” Yes, I am a child of the seventies. My dad is a huge western fan and I’ve been watching some of his favorite films, trying to broaden my overall cinematic repertoire. I’ve recently seen “The Quiet Man,” “McClintock,” and “The Alamo,” and one night while popping a DVD out of the player, had the … Continue reading
