Prejudices in Marriage

I came across this quote and I thought it was appropriate. ‘The less secure a man is, the more likely he is to have extreme prejudices.’ The quote is by Clint Eastwood and is from what I think will be a fun book called ‘The Best Things Ever Said in the Dark. – the wittiest, most provocative quotations from the movies.’ It struck me that there’s a lot of truth in the above quote. How often do you hear a man say, ‘I’m not going to see that! It’s a chick flick.’ This can be especially so when it’s an … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

Definitely, Maybe, for sure! What a charming, terrifically enchanting film from the makers of Notting Hill and Love Actually. Rarely is it the maker of the film that draws me in first, but Notting Hill and later, Love Actually were such outstanding movies that I picked this up without knowing the first thing about the plot, the actors or anything else about the movie and am I glad that I did! The Story There is so much to say about this movie that I really don’t know where to start, so let me just hit some highlights. Ryan Reynolds plays … Continue reading

Because I Said So (2007)

Don’t waste your time. Seriously, I haven’t been this disappointed in a movie since I paid money to watch Home on the Range with my daughter. The film features Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo. Keaton plays Daphne Wilder, a mother of three beautiful daughters (Moore, Graham and Perabo). She dances in attendance at the weddings of her two older daughters Maggie and Mae (Graham and Perabo) but wrings her hands in worry that Milly (Moore) is never going to be happy. Milly has a string of bad relationships that we hear about more than see. She … Continue reading

Does Your Guy Like Chick Flicks?

If so, is he open about it or a closet chick flick fan? Or maybe a little of both? Open Fans One couple we’re friends with the husband actually seems to like chick flicks more than the wife. He’s not embarrassed at all about admitting he likes them. In fact, he’ll turn the tables on any guy who tries to shame him for it. He’ll say things like, “You don’t know how many great movies you miss if you don’t give them a chance.” Or, “Don’t fault me for being in touch with my feminine side. You should try it. … Continue reading

Steel Magnolias (1989)

“Steel Magnolias” began as a successful off-Broadway play written by Robert Harling, and was made into a film in 1989. Full of talented actresses, quirky and clever dialogue, and a touching storyline, this movie became an instant hit and today is a modern classic. It’s Shelby’s wedding day, and everyone in the Louisiana neighborhood where she lives is getting ready. Truvy, (Dolly Parton) the owner of the local beauty parlor, is expecting good business as all the ladies will want to do their best. M’Lynn (Sally Field) is especially nervous – as the mother of the bride, she hopes everything … Continue reading
