Controversial Device Repels Teenagers

In a previous article, we wrote about a ring tone that only teenagers can hear. They use it to fool adults into thinking that they aren’t using a cell phone, such as in school where cell phones may be banned. Now, it seems, the adults are getting back at the teens, taking advantage of the sound to repel teens from hanging out in places where they are not wanted, such as in front of an apartment building, at the street corner or on school grounds after hours. But the device is highly controversial. Human rights activists and civil liberties unions … Continue reading

A New Food Network Star Is Born

I had blogged before about the show “The Next Food Network Star.” I had never watched it until my husband pointed out it had a former marine as a contestant. Being a food show junkie, I decided to watch it and was immediately hooked! Last night was the big finale. It was between two women – Rory Schepisi and Amy Finley. Rory’s point of view was Real Food for Real People and Amy’s point of view was the Gourmet Next Door. The finale was actually supposed to be between Rory and Joshua Adam Garcia (JAG) as Amy was eliminated the … Continue reading

Nothing But the Truth – Avi

“Nothing But the Truth” is one of my favorite novels by Avi. Written in documentary style, with none of the traditional introspective narrative to take the reader into the minds and hearts of the characters, we are presented with just the facts and are left to make up our own minds. Our character is Phillip Malloy, a freshman in high school. Each morning in school, “The Star Spangled Banner” is played over the loudspeaker, and Phillip hums along. His teacher tells him that he’s causing a disturbance, but he continues to hum each and every morning as the music is … Continue reading

NBA’s Tim Hardaway – Some People Just Never Learn

Well, it had happened again. NBA player Tim Hardaway went on the radio to say that he “hated gay people.” Apparently, Tim hasn’t been keeping up with the whole “Grey’s Anatomy”/gay scandal. Hump, he should read our blogs! Anyhow, last Tuesday, Tim went to a Miami radio station for an interview. Show host Dan Le Batard asked Hardaway how he felt about former NBA player John Amaechi announcing his homosexuality. Amaechi made the announcement right before the release of his new autobiography, Man in the Middle. He is the first NBA player to publicly admit to being homosexual. After Le … Continue reading

Rosie O’Donnell Under Attack—Is It Warranted?

Goodness—will it ever end? It seems every few days something happens on ABC’s “The View” that makes headlines. This week’s headline grabber: co-host Rosie O’Donnell’s imitation of a Chinese person. Did you catch it? On December 5th, O’Donnell was commenting on actor Danny DeVito’s inebriated visit to the show when she broke out in what is now being called by the Asian-American community an “offensive accent.” On the show O’Donnell said: “The fact is that it’s (DeVito’s drunken appearance) news all over the world. That you know, you can imagine in China it’s like: ‘Ching chong. Danny DeVito, ching chong, … Continue reading

The Outrage Over the Breast

We’re pro-breast here at the Baby Blog – we’re pro anything that is comfortable and healthy for mom and baby. So if you choose to breastfeed, huzzah, if you choose to express the milk and bottle feed, huzzah and if you chose to rely on formula, huzzah for you. So imagine my surprise this morning as I read a vitriolic letter written to a parenting magazine about having a bare breast on the cover of it with a baby attached to the breast, nursing. It’s a beautiful photograph and the baby was adorable. Yet the reader labeled this photograph as … Continue reading

Celebrity News Week in Review for October 27, 2006

The celebrity news you may have missed! 10. Naomi Campbell Arrested Agreed, this is about as newsworthy as George Michael being arrested again, but I thought I’d mention it. She’s a beautiful woman and seems to have it all, especially anger issues! This time, she was arrested for assaulting her drug counselor. Currently, there are three other employees seeking legal action for her assaulted them as well. 9. Mariah Carey’s Concert Cancelled Just when it seemed like her comeback was complete, Mariah hits a road bump. Her Hong Kong concert was cancelled, reportedly due to her unreasonable demands. But the … Continue reading

Popular Actor’s Controversial Appearance In Political Ads

I think I have seen actor Michael J. Fox on TV more in the last day or so than I did when he appeared on “Family Ties” (the NBC sitcom that made him famous). Chock it up to Election Day and the fact that the award-winning actor has been tapped to appear in a slew of 30-second TV ads (airing on television and on the Internet) for five Democrats who support stem cell research, including Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle (I live in Wisconsin and the governor’s race is a hotly contested battle). Ironically, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease that all … Continue reading

Christian Dorm Controversy

For those who wanted it to be a Christians-only home, it just wasn’t going to happen. After all, the building is being constructed on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which has strict discrimination policies. But the Christian dorm is still creating controversy. I know, because I graduated from UW-Madison and just returned from a visit to the campus a couple of weeks ago. At the center of the controversy is the Pres House, which is run by the Presbyterian Campus Ministry. As I mentioned earlier you don’t have to be Presbyterian to live there—heck, you don’t even have … Continue reading

Breastfeeding Ads vs. Formula Company Lobbies

Over the last year, the Ad Council (those people responsible for cutting edge public service announcements), with sponsorship from the US government, has been creating PSA’s aimed at the promotion of breastfeeding. You probably haven’t seen the ads, though, because they have been critically scrutinized by whom else but the International Formula Council who has aggressively lobbied to prevent the government from airing the clips as they were originally created. What’s the hype about? Well it seems the ad council opted to focus on the possible harm that can come to infants who are fed formula and that doesn’t sit … Continue reading
