Pregnancy and Excited Insomnia

It’s pretty much guaranteed that I will wake up at some point in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. At first I regularly awoke at five o’clock in the morning. As the baby grows my nightly bathroom break has moved more regularly to three o’clock in morning. Largely this regular occurrence rarely disrupts my sleep too much. Last night, however, after my early morning bladder relief I could not get back to sleep. I was experiencing a slight case of insomnia. I tried and I tried to doze back off to sleep for two hours. Finally, at … Continue reading

Differences Between Mothers And Fathers

As a mother, I often catch myself telling my husband what to do with our baby. Of course, the decisions I make concerning parenting are the best possible choices, and he could only benefit from hearing my advice, right? Most women are born with a strong motherly instinct. To many of us, caring for children comes naturally. As youngsters, many girls gravitate toward playing with dolls, caring for stuffed animals, and preparing meals for toys. As young teenagers, many become interested in babysitting. As mothers, especially breastfeeding mothers, we are often the primary caregivers for our infants. There’s no doubt … Continue reading

Super Mom? Not So Much!

As a single mom, I sometimes have to stop and remind myself that I am not Super Mom. I cannot do it all by myself. I do not have all the money in the world. I do not have enough energy to keep moving all day, nonstop. And I need to remind myself many times that this is all ok. This recent frustration comes from my daughter’s new softball schedule. This is her first year playing softball (although she has played basketball and soccer in the past). She has two games each week, some of which are almost an hour’s … Continue reading

The Joy of Fatherhood

My youngest children are 2 year old, twin girls. They are quite a handful. Just this morning, I had an errand to run at the local Target. Now when I say local, I mean about a mile-easy walking distance for myself. In fact, since I live in New York City (where parking is a HUGE part of daily life) I figured that walking would actually save time in the long run. To give them a chance to go out (but mostly as a personal favor to my wife) I decided to take them with me. Now the twins like to … Continue reading

Play-Doh – An Oldie but a Goodie

My new baby is five days old and my three-year old gal is still adjusting to the presence of her built-in best friend. This morning, I broke out the Play-Doh and spent over two hours rolling, cutting, shaping and growing hair with the world’s most famous colorful compound. There is so much to love about this stuff. It is readily accessible, fairly affordable, safe and non-toxic and is capable of entertaining a toddler, even one whose attention span is at an all time low, for hours on end. One of the strange things about my girl’s recent behavior has been … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Baby’s Got Back (Problems)

My workout schedule has been derailed by an awfully sore lower back. Eight-year-old girls hawking Thin Mint Cookies sabotaged my good eating habits. Not a great weekend! Beginning early last week, this ole’ back of mine started to feel a bit stiff. The condition regressed into the weekend. While my back pain did not stand in the way of my two workouts last week, it has since sidelined me and I am feeling particularly sedentary right now. Fortunately, during this time, the food going into my mouth has been fairly decent, save for handfuls of those delicious annual goodies in … Continue reading

Happy Daddy’s Day to the Boogieman Destroyer

I remember the day our son was born. It had been a difficult birth, 37 hours, and our son had come out sleepy from the Magnesium Sulfate I was given. It was a frightening experience, seeing his little body limp, not crying. He spent two days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Because I was hooked up to so many IV’s and not doing so well myself, I wasn’t able to see my son until the day after his birth. My husband fed our son his first bottle. He stayed with him when I couldn’t, rubbed his little head, loved … Continue reading

What I Learned From My Dad

Since tomorrow is Father’s Day I took a moment to reflect on the many valuable lessons that I learned from my father. He wasn’t a perfect man but he tried to be a good father and husband and I learned a lot from him. My Dad, sisters, and I on our latest family vacation to Mexico. Honor my mother – At a young age we learned to respect and honor our mother. Our dad did not tolerate any abuse of her by us. He always respected her. I can’t remember a time when he did not open a door for … Continue reading
