Mediterranean Diet Wins Glowing Reviews

It seems as if people are always looking for the perfect diet.  But, it often alludes us.  We either feel deprived of food or don’t want to eat what we can have.  Worse yet, there are the diets that just don’t work! For years, I have been hearing good things about the Mediterranean diet.  This is the diet primarily followed by people that live in the southern regions of Italy, Greece, and Spain.  It includes a lot of fruit and vegetables along with olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fish, dairy, meat (but not red), and yes, even wine.  The diet … Continue reading

Small Meals Are Best

I don’t really need another study to tell me that eating frequent small meals is best…but here’s another one anyhow. A several French researchers, including Xavier Allirot, knew that if you ate smaller meals frequently throughout the day, rather than the traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it was easier to keep weight off.  But, there were no studies to prove it.  Allirot said, “There is no scientific consensus as to the optimum number of meals we should have for weight management and speculations regarding this are often contradictory.” So, he and his colleagues set out to do their own.  The … Continue reading

Negative Consequences of Yo-Yo Dieting

Most of us know that yo-yo dieting (losing weight, gaining weight, losing again, gaining again) isn’t good for your health.  Studies in the past have suggested that it could lead to gallbladder disease, high cholesterol and blood pressure. It may also have a negative psychological impact, such as leading to depression.  It can actually decrease your motivation and make you feel that weight loss will never happen. According to new research by Wake Forest University, in postmenopausal women yo-yo dieting may actually increase the risk of developing heart disease.  One of the things that can happen is that although blood … Continue reading

Maintaining Your Weight

Are you happy about the idea of just maintaining your weight? We rarely hear people talk about that. We constantly hear about the need to lose weight but we don’t hear about the part where we just maintain our weight. I have been in a real rut lately with my eating and exercise habits. I fell off the wagon for a bit and although I have tried to get back on, it has been a rough road. It’s become that rollercoaster ride of having ups and downs. I just can’t seem to get myself completely together. One would think that … Continue reading

How to Determine Portion Sizes

I have mentioned that one of the most important things about the diabetic diet is portion control. While you get three meals a day and three snacks, you still need to follow proper portion control to remain within your diet. Now, if you are like me, you don’t have time to be bothered with a scale. I’ve bought food scales before, used them once or twice, and then put them up in the cabinet, never to see the light of day again. But, I got a very helpful sheet from the diabetic specialist that makes portion control easier. If you … Continue reading

Fast Food is the Devil

Okay, I wrote my title tongue-in-cheek because I love fast food as much as the next person and quite possibly more. And, it isn’t just fast food that is bad for us because sit-down restaurant food can be just as bad. You can eat out, but you need to be careful and think about what you are putting in your mouth, which is something you should be doing at home as well. A friend of mine moaned about dieting because he couldn’t have fries. Well, you shouldn’t have fries, but you can, just don’t get the 1/2 pound supersized bucket … Continue reading

Kirstie Alley Comes Clean and David Ogden Stiers Comes Out

These two news stories may come as no big surprise to some of you, but at least the two celebrities are coming clean with the truth. After months of seeing photos of Kirstie Alley looking – well, let’s just say a little heavier than her bikini shot on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in November 2006, she has finally admitted publicly that she gained weight. She said that she started screaming when she stepped on the scales for the first time in 15 months because the scale read 228 pounds. Alley had gained 83 pounds and was at her highest weight … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! – The Fruit Diet

I have recovered from the Great Potato Salad Debacle of 2007 and am now at 260.2 pounds. It was so not worth eating the potato salad to wander around in 264+ land for two weeks, and I have learned my lesson. I’ve also been off chocolate for over four weeks now. Yeah me! Now, a little while ago I mentioned a fruit diet that gave me a boost in the right direction. I’d like to share a little more of that with you today. I found it in Woman’s World magazine, the July 24th, 2007 edition, page 18. The magazine … Continue reading

Charade – Gilbert Morris

Ollie Benson is a computer genius. He’s been working for years on a computer program to help people create movies at home, and as soon as he gets all the bugs worked out, he thinks it will be pretty cool. His ambitions don’t go much further than that, though – Ollie is a hundred pounds overweight and he doesn’t have very much self-esteem. He’s tried blind dating, but his appearance seems to repulse most women, and his hang-dog attitude doesn’t help, either. His program finished, he sends it off to a major software corporation and sits back to see what … Continue reading

Body Image And Our Kids

When I think about eating disorders, I think of teens and young women. The thought that elementary-aged kids are calling themselves fat, wanting to go on diets and counting grams of fat is something that I wasn’t aware of. Then yesterday I read a report that says eating disorders are no longer the domain of teens and young women. To say that I was disturbed would be an understatement. The report stated that preschool (!) girls are telling their moms they want to go on diets and six-year-old children are being diagnosed with anorexia. How sad that our young kids … Continue reading
