The Economy and Preparedness

The economy has taken a turn for the worse, and this really illustrates the point of being prepared for hard times. Many people mistakenly think that we promote food storage for such events as the end of the world, but the food storage, and emergency preparedness goes beyond that. The people I know who have used their food storage did it turning times of economic hardship and unemployment. It is important that everyone is prepared to handle the trying times of life. Over a year ago the church came out with new guidelines that outline the priority of each part … Continue reading

Focus on Food Storage

The rising cost of food may make it more difficult to begin or complete your food storage. However, you can still do it even if you have a limited budget and limited space. You just need to make a consistent goal to put food storage away each month. It is important to start small. The recent pamphlet from the church puts the order as preparing your 72 hour kit, then your two week supply of water. After that you need to store three months of food. Then you should move onto a year’s supply of food. Your 72 hour kit … Continue reading

Food Storage Items Available Online

A few months ago I wrote about the Food Storage introductory kit that the church had available to purchase through its website. This kit was a great way to start your food storage. The church has now expanded the food that you can order on its website. In addition to the starter kit you can purchase cases of wheat, pinto beans, white rice, and oats. These are great basic foods to have for long term storage. If you are considering buying these foods for your long-term storage, you should also know how to cook and eat them. Additionally you will … Continue reading

March 2008 Preparedness Goals

This week is national procrastination week. It is a time to reflect on what you procrastinate in your life. I thought this was an excellent thing to consider in regards to emergency preparedness and food storage. This is no doubt a result of the fact that it is the area that I manage to procrastinate the most. If you are putting off preparing for a future emergency, now is the time. As a challenge for March I think that we should focus on getting the technical side of things in order to handle an emergency. The goals this month focus … Continue reading

Do Not Fear

Fear can be crippling. There are many different aspects that can cause people to be fearful. Church leaders counsel us that we do not need to fear, as long as we are doing our best to live the commandments of the gospel. Currently there is much to be concerned about in the world and country. We are at war, as well as the economic issues that are gripping the nation. In addition to that there is a change in moral values that has been taking place over the last several years. It is easy to begin to doubt and worry … Continue reading

One calling that you may have is that of emergency preparedness coordinator for the ward. The duties for this calling vary from ward to ward depending on what the bishop wants you to do. Clothing for Emergency Kits

An important item for your emergency kits is appropriate clothing for each member of your family. You will not want to pack three days worth of clothing in your kit, because this will take up too much room. You will want to provide at least one change of clothes and if you have room clothes that your family would be comfortable sleeping in. As you gather this clothing for your family you will want to make sure that you are planning for the weather conditions that will be facing your family. You may want a lightweight jacket and shorts for … Continue reading

Food for your Emergency Kits

As you prepare your emergency 72–hour kits, food is an essential item for those 72-hours. It can take up a lot of room. If you are storing a large quantity of canned foods, the kit can quickly become heavy. Since an ideal kit is portable, you should avoid making your kit too heavy to carry. Here are some ideas for making the kits more manageable. 1) You can purchase MRE’s for your family to eat during the emergency. MRE stands for meals ready to eat. They include an entrée and often dessert for each meal. You may want to test … Continue reading

Fire Safety and Prevention

One emergency, which can be devastating, is to have a fire in your home. I have seen one house fire in person. We were on our way home, and the fire was there on a side road. It was huge and we could see it from quite a distance. It was quite scary to watch as it consumed the house. It made me sad to think of the family who lived there, and everything that they were losing in the fire. This experience taught me the importance of preventing a fire, and preparing your family for the possibility of one. … Continue reading

Water Purification

In addition to storing a two-week supply of water, it is important to have water purification methods on hand. This is especially useful if you have to evacuate for some reason and do not have the room to take your stored water with you. For this reason you will want to make sure that your water purification methods are easily portable. You should always have at least two methods on hand. I know people that use dual methods to purify their water. The easiest way to purify water is to boil it. Experts agree that bringing water to a boil … Continue reading
