Humbled, or Picked On?

When you think of the word “humble,” what does that bring to mind? I used to think it meant “lowly,” “downtrodden,” “having low self-esteem.” However, God has asked us to be humble, and He doesn’t want us to feel bad about ourselves. What does He want? He wants us to turn to Him in times of grief. He wants us to acknowledge that we are powerless on our own and that we need Him constantly. That is the true definition of humility – to turn to God for help and to recognize His hand in all things, knowing that He … Continue reading

Endure to the End

In the scriptures we can read about the importance of enduring to the end. One example of this is in Doctrine and Covenants 14:7: “And, if you keep my commandments, and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.” Similarly in Matthew 24:13 it says “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” So what does it mean to endure to the end? When I think of enduring something, I think of putting up with something unpleasant or just hanging on until it … Continue reading

Staying in the Race

I think one of the more challenging things for me as a Christian is to stay in the race; to keep going and not get burned out. This is not to say I ever consider rejecting God. I know that He exists as there is evidence all around me. I’m talking about keeping myself from becoming discouraged or backsliding. I do become weary on my Christian journey from time to time; I notice this more when I’m not taking the Sabbath rest I need. Sometimes I feel too like I’m fighting a losing battle against the declining morals of society. … Continue reading

Forged in the Refiner’s Fire — compiled by Candace E. Salima and Elizabeth A. Cheever

We’re all taught that our trials serve to make us stronger, and we have seen that this is true. When we look back on the things we have endured, we can see how each difficult phase of our lives taught us, matured us, and brought us nearer to being the people we want to become. In the religious nonfiction book “Forged in the Refiner’s Fire,” authors Candace E. Salima and Elizabeth Cheever have compiled twenty-two stories of challenge and trial, and the lesson that was learned through each. Contributors include Merrill Osmond, who tells of a commitment he made and … Continue reading

The Three Elements of Fitness

Do you know what the elements of fitness are? They include strength, flexibility and endurance. These three elements are combined in almost all fitness programs, especially those that are designed to offer a balanced and healthy active lifestyle. When it comes to the three elements of fitness, you don’t have to design an exercise program for your children to incorporate those as they do in their everyday activities. Check them out on the playground or at the park and pay attention. When they are playing tag, the person who is ‘it’ is often getting quite the endurance workout. When they … Continue reading

Measuring Your Strength – Abdominals

Abdominal muscle strength and endurance are usually measured by crunches. As we measured our upper body strength earlier by push-ups. We use crunches to measure how strong and enduring our abdonminals are going to be. In order to do that, you want to lay flat on your back, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. You want to keep your arms flot and extended, palm down on the floor next to you. You should curl upwards in the crunch, raising your shoulders up and pointing your chin towards your feet. It’s important that you do not use your neck … Continue reading

Measuring Your Strength – Upper Body

Do you remember the old Atlas ads that showed you the scrawny kid on the beach getting sand kicked in their face? I do – while it’s been years since I saw one. It’s important to measure your body strength in order to determine the progress you are making. Most gyms don’t necessarily do a strength test, however if you are working with a personal trainer or building your own exericse program – a strength test is going to give you a good barometer of where you are at and where to start. Most strength tests are testing your endurance … Continue reading

Hell May Pour Forth

“Hell may pour forth its rage like the burning lava of mount Vesuvius, or of Etna, or of the most terrible of the burning mountains; and yet shall ‘Mormonism’ stand. Water, fire, truth and God are all realities. Truth is ‘Mormonism.’ God is the author of it. He is our shield. It is by Him we received our birth. It was by His voice that we were called to a dispensation of His Gospel in the beginning of the fullness of times. It was by Him we received the Book of Mormon; and it is by Him that we remain … Continue reading
