Sample Annual Review for a Home Based Business

Yesterday, I talked about the importance of evaluating your performance and the performance of your home – based business at least once a year. Since I have not evaluated my two home – based businesses yet this year, now is a good time for me to do so. Today I am evaluating my freelance writing business. It is the business that I spend the most time working at, and the business that is my primary source of income. Just so you know exactly what is being evaluated, my freelance writing business is a sole proprietorship. I work part time, between ten and … Continue reading

Have You Done an Evaluation for Your Home Based Business?

At this time of year, many people think back on how their businesses have performed over the past year. If you own and operate your own business, this necessarily involves evaluating your own performance as well. Giving yourself and your business an evaluation may seem unappealing, but it is certainly something doing, at least on an annual basis if not more frequently. Evaluating yourself and your business does not have to be a complicated or time consuming exercise. After all, your time is valuable, and you still (hopefully) have plenty of work to do. The year is not over yet, so … Continue reading

Ditching the Note Cards

There is, I think, an important distinction that needs to be made between certain types of knowledge and certain types of evaluative procedures. If you read last weeks post you’re probably up to date about my big test and my note card usage. What you might not be up to date about are my thoughts about said evaluation. Currently, I’m studying for a somewhat lengthy multiple choice test evaluating what I think of as memorized knowledge: “Match this to that,” or “Which of the following don’t belong?” or “What year did this event take place in. The problems with this … Continue reading

Toddler Speech Evaluations

My son had a speech evaluation this past week. It has been determined that he needs to attend speech therapy twice a week. My cousin attended speech therapy when he was my son’s age. From what I’ve heard, speech therapy is very helpful for late talkers. I was very apprehensive before my son’s evaluation. I didn’t know what to expect. I went to the speech and hearing center, which is on a college campus about fifteen miles from our home. I took my son in and filled out the registration papers. When it was time for us to go back … Continue reading

Time to Plan for Next Year’s Homeschool Program

Most Homeschoolers I speak to are quickly nearing the time when they take a break for the summer, or at least call the academic year complete. For some that might mean meeting all of the requirements of their online or virtual school for the year and receiving their final grades. For others it may mean finishing a set of books or curriculum. For others (I included) local homeschool classes are nearing an end. I realized our year was almost over when my kids’ math teacher gave me their 3rd semester grades. It is time to plan for next year’s homeschool … Continue reading

What If I Was Being Evaluated?

I heard a very young woman talking the other day about how she was working to “get her children back”–obviously the Department of Human Services had taken her children and she had attended parenting classes. Now, she was having supervised visits and her take on the experience was that she was being “evaluated” to see if she was fit to parent full time. It got me to think about myself as a single parenting–what I do well and what I do not; and I wondered how I would feel and how I would fair if I was being evaluated? I … Continue reading

Do You Have Enough Information to Make a Good Decision?

When it comes to our home businesses, it is often NOT that we cannot make a good or reasonable decision when problem-solving opportunities arrive, but that we don’t gather enough information prior to making those decisions. We may feel rushed or as if we need to make a quick decision right now and we haven’t even gotten a clear picture of the problem or the situation yet. It may just be a matter of our needing to take time to gather all that information, in order to make sound and successful decisions. It takes some patience and persistence in order … Continue reading

Figuring Out Why Something Failed

It can be very tempting to just walk away from a failed project in our business operations. We may be aggravated, embarrassed or frustrated and just want to forget that we ever did whatever went wrong. But, there is a great deal that can be learned from going over our failures and figuring out exactly what went wrong, and why… It is actually a good idea to do a “post mortem” for failures in our home business–look over the details and try to figure out if it was something we could have controlled, a matter of the economy or marketing, … Continue reading

Education Dictionary: Assessment

Like most other professions, education has its own set of vocabulary and terminology. Some words are common with everyday life while others are more specific to teacher jargon. In my next few articles, I would like to discuss some of the educator terms and words. The first word that I will define and discuss is assessment. Assessment is the continuous process that is used to examine and increase student learning. During assessment one makes expectations for the learner, creates a device for gathering and interpreting information from the child, and uses the results to make changes to improve learning performance. … Continue reading

Do You Know and Understand Your Market Conditions?

Now that you are in business, you are likely learning all sorts of terms and business techniques that you might not have had to know about before. For many home business owners, getting a handle on marketing, advertising, and publicity can be one of the biggest and most foreign challenges. One term it would behoove you to understand is: “market conditions.” Market condition refers to just what it sounds like—the conditions and realities of a specific market. A market can be defined either by product or field, or demographic, or geography. For your purposes, you basically want to know what … Continue reading
