Are There Too Many School Activities in November and December?

When my children were all in grade school, I would dread the onset of November! It seemed that starting in November and running right up until the holiday vacation break, there would be so many school activities—parent nights and open houses, band and orchestra concerts, pageants, plays, field trips—you name it. There were weeks when I think I was at the school every night! Of course, it wasn’t the school’s fault that I had three kids, but I still couldn’t help but think that there were a few too many activities and expectations for child participation during the holiday season. … Continue reading

Best in Show: A History of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

It’s covered live on TV, has special reporters, style, excitement, and stars, but it’s not the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes, or the Oscars…it’s the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! The Westminster Kennel Club’s 131th Annual Dog Show wrapped up yesterday. “Ch. Felicity’s Diamond Jim,” a.k.a. “James,” an English Springer Spaniel sprung away with the coveted Best in Show trophy. Fairs, Events and Expos, Oh My!

In my previous post, “Don’t just sit there…stand there. A simple tip for events & expos” I discussed one of the biggest mistakes I made while promoting my home-based direct selling business at fairs and expos. I would like to use this opportunity to tell you about my second biggest mistake (with hopes that you will learn from it, of course). When I was struggling with getting party bookings at vendor events, one of my direct sales managers suggested that I gather information about potential customers, prospects and hostesses by using a give-away. In a nutshell, I created drawing slips … Continue reading

Don’t just sit there…stand there. A simple tip for events & expos.

When I joined as a direct sales consultant for a line of skincare products a few years ago, I became a “fair-junky”. I literally felt high when I watched hundreds of event-goers check out my products and booth. Speaking of my booth, I would often spend hours picking out perfect fonts for my sales fliers and adorning my skin-care bottles with raffia and decorative baskets. It was adorable. You could easily mistake my booth for a miniature high-end spa. Despite my efforts, I spent far more on the booth fee (and decorative accessories) than I’d earned in sales. I’d convinced … Continue reading

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Thursday marks the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States’ entry into World War II. In a previous blog I shared my personal story about Hawaii’s most popular tourist attraction, which draws more than 1.5 million visitors from around the world each year. Pearl Harbor Naval Base is home to the USS Arizona, the USS Utah, the Battleship Missouri and in 1999, the USS Missouri Memorial opened, further enhancing the importance of this historic area. To commemorate the event numerous events will be taking place throughout Oahu. If you are lucky enough to be … Continue reading
