Spending Christmas in the Family Room

I am overflowing today with gratitude that we were able to spend our Christmas together as a family. While extended family is nice (and we will be seeing them for the rest of the weekend), it was amazing to just spend the day home alone with my husband and children. We attended our local church on Christmas eve and then rushed home to snuggle in for the night. The next morning, the kids were up bright and early and the adults teased that we just might spend the whole day in bed, leaving the present opening until tomorrow. Of course … Continue reading

Equipping the Modern Family Room

Do you have a family room in your home? At one time, this might have been called the den, and that brings all sorts of images of a dark small place filled with wood panel walls and shag carpeting. But today’s family rooms can be bright and airy. They can feature an electronic bonanza of modern media and be called media rooms, or they can be open to the kitchen and be called great rooms. Many are multifunctional rooms, where television watching, reading, game playing and computer time takes place. Whatever the case, the family room is an ideal place … Continue reading

Prepping the Family Room

One of my tasks today is to pack up my books from the shelves in the family room. This is because we are going to do some quick updates in the family room in the next couple of weeks. We haven’t abandoned the kitchen by any means. But while we are still reviewing our options, we can take advantage of the time to get some work done elsewhere. The motivation behind going ahead with the family room is the carpet that will be installed in a few weeks. To save money, we are going to pull out the old vinyl … Continue reading

Adventures in Carpeting

Last week, we decided to head over to a local flooring store to take a look at our options for kitchen flooring. Here is what happened. Remember now that we were looking around at ideas, availability and pricing to help us make some decisions for a kitchen redo. We wanted to see what types of flooring might look nice, hold up in the kitchen and be affordable. At the flooring store, we met a great salesman who was also a closet designer. I mean that he designs rooms as a side business, not that he designs closets. I’ll call him … Continue reading

Warm Up a Room

Warm up your home even in the middle of a winter chill with these great tips. Modern homes boast cathedral ceilings and more space than ever before. The possible downside to these larger spaces is a possible loss of warmth to the space. Sometimes even smaller rooms can feel cool because of color and design choices, and sometimes even the furniture arrangment. There are ways to to make a room cozier, even if it currently seems overwhelming. Warm paint colors, such as reds and oranges will instantly warm up a room. They will also make the space seem smaller. In … Continue reading

Organizing the Family Room (5)

I am down to the last bit of my family room organization. The only thing left to do is the games. This isn’t going to be easy, since we have two shelves above and to the left of the fireplace that are packed with games. In addition, there are more games downstairs in the basement. Most of the games haven’t been played in a long time. Is this because we don’t socialize as much and the kids are too small to play some of them with us? Or is it because the games themselves aren’t very organized? If you have … Continue reading

Organizing the Family Room (3)

The weekend is over. That means it is time for me to get back into organizing the family room. So far, we’ve conquered the books and magazine. Let’s get into the area that causes me the most trouble: the video tapes and DVDs. Here is our organizing list so far: Books Magazines Video tapes and DVDs Cassettes, CDs and records Games Let’s get started! Back a few years ago, we acquired quite a few VHS tapes. This is because everyone else was quickly switching their collections over to DVDs, and we still didn’t have a DVD player. Now we do, … Continue reading
