Sustainable Fishing Practices

The other day, I blogged about fishing practices that can harm the environment and kill innocent sea life. While I am sure there are some out there that think all fishing practices are harmful, for those of us that do enjoy eating various types of fish, shrimp, clams, etc., there are sustainable methods of fishing which are much less harmful to marine life and their habitat. What are some examples of sustainable fishing practices? One of the best is the old tried and true technique of hook and lining. That’s right – just have a rod with one line and … Continue reading

Fishing Methods that Harm

We all know that fish is good for our diets – excellent actually – but you may be torn between wanting to improve your health and wanting to be eco-friendly. Some of the practices used by fisherman are harmful not only to the environment, but innocent sea life as well. Here in coastal North Carolina, there has been a lot of controversy over fishermen who use the gillnetting method. Gillnetting is the practice of putting a curtain of netting in the water to catch fish. The netting is supposed to be large enough to let the fish’s head pass through, … Continue reading

When Fishermen Become Celebrities – Part I

Last weekend, something unusual happened – I had time alone. On Saturday, my dear husband decided to take my son shopping. Oh, all the possibilities of things I could do! I could write, I could clean off my desk, I could sort through old photos, I could paint the kitchen. But, what did I do instead? I plopped my butt on the sofa and watched four hours of “Deadliest Catch.” “Deadliest Catch” is a series on Discovery that follows crab fisherman though two fishing seasons (king crab and opilio crab). Now some of you that have not seen the show … Continue reading

How God Answered One Man’s Prayer

We never know what the future holds or what the next moment might bring as a local and highly experienced fisherman found out recently. While doing what is, for him, a usual occupation, Bob Russo was swept from the rocks at Currarong on Sunday December 9. You might think someone who writes for Fishing World, and knows well the dangers of fishing from rocks, would have seen it coming. He did not. He looked at the weather and the sea and considered it safe to fish. But then he moved down the rock to gather weed which he uses as … Continue reading

Family Travel: Fishing…A Chance To Catch More Than Just Dinner

Have you seen the weather report? Record-breaking temperatures are blanketing the southern part of the United States… and they have been creeping up to my neck of the woods (Upper Midwest). Yesterday we had highs in the 80s, which is virtually unheard of in October (typically, were gearing up for our first snowfall in October). To celebrate, we “playgroup moms” (moms from my daughter’s playgroup) decided to take advantage of the beautiful (and rare) weather. I don’t know how it happened, but we ended up taking the kids to a local fishing hole (it’s an old quarry that the local … Continue reading

Fishing Fun

A few summers ago my son went fishing with his great-grandpa Parke, we just went along for the ride. Tyler had a great time. It was also a good bonding experience for him and his great-grandpa, whom he still calls “my fishing grandpa”. Tyler was so excited when he felt that first tug on the line. Then with grandpa’s help they slowly reeled the fish in. His delighted cries filled the air as he pulled the fish out of the water. It was at least 18 inches long. During the next hour Tyler and grandpa caught two more fish. By … Continue reading
