Free is Fun

Nothing delights my 8-year-old daughter more than collecting free samples.  She covets pint-sized lotion samples, lipstick, eye shadow, and blush, as well as free vials of perfume.  However, nothing lights her free sample fire more than those disposable shampoo, conditioner and hair gel packets that are handed out by the fistful at our local salon. Free health and beauty products are fun to collect regardless of your economic status.  In addition to being able to try new products without spending a dime, you can often score money-saving coupons to use on future purchases.  Many major manufacturers provide free samples … Continue reading

Free Family Entertainment

My 8-year-old is hooked on retro cartoons. I have the Smurfs to thank for that. Ever since the blue guys debuted on the big screen and I told my daughter that I grew up watching them on TV, she’s been obsessed with viewing animated shows from the 70s and 80s, including the Snorks, Hong Kong Phooey, and Heathcliff. Retro cartoons are fun to watch as a family; however, the pleasure can really put a dent in your wallet if you are not careful. When my daughter expressed interest in watching the same cartoons I grew up with I offered to … Continue reading

Free Fun to Battle the Winter Blues

This week, much of the nation has been paralyzed by brutally cold temperatures.  In my neck of the woods, several school districts closed because it was simply too dangerous to allow children to be exposed to -35 degree windchills. Old Man Winter’s brutal blast has forced many families indoors where they are spending quality time together watching movies, playing board games and cooking.  Fortunately, these activities don’t have to put a strain on your household budget, including the movie-watching. These days there are a slew of simple ways you can avoid paying high fees for movie rentals.  One of the … Continue reading

Seven Ways to Enjoy Movies on a Budget

In a tight budget, entertainment is usually one of the first line items to go, or at least to be reduced drastically. One of the favorite ways that most of us entertain ourselves is through television or movies. Here are seven ways that you can enjoy movies, even when you are on a budget. 1. Free Rentals. Redbox, the movie rental machine that is available at many grocery stores and drug stores offers movie (and game) rentals for $1 or $2 a night. This is inexpensive in itself, however, the company also offers Redbox coupon codes that can be used … Continue reading

Movie Ticket or Lottery Ticket?

Last night I was cleaning out my purse and came across a couple of movie passes. The little pieces of paper have been sitting in my wallet for months—ever since my young daughter fell asleep during “Charlotte’s Web.” She was so looking forward to seeing the film when it first opened back in December 2006. A few days before Christmas I broke down and bought tickets for us to see the show—-she ended up falling asleep on my lap about five minutes after the theater lights dimmed. (Note: It was the early showing, but I figured all the excitement leading … Continue reading

The Best Frugal Place To Be

Where is the best frugal place to be? The library of course! It’s free. Free? But isn’t a library card always free? I can hear you thinking that as soon as I typed those words. But guess what? First, not all library cards are free. I did some research and in some area’s there is a fee to obtain one. But that is really not the point. The point is using the library to remain frugal. And since anything and everything that is available at the library is free, and free is the frugal woman’s keyword, then the library is … Continue reading
