Would You Allow Your Teen to Do This?

Technology is so advanced these days that I barely blink when I hear what some teens are doing with digital gadgets. However, when I learned what 17-year-old Rachel Harris was doing with the help of the World Wide Web, I must admit, I was intrigued. The Michigan high school senior apparently doesn’t have wealthy parents to help her pay for her college education, so she’s taking matters into her own hands. The honor student has always dreamed of attending the prestigious University of Notre Dame, located in South Bend, Indiana. The problem: Coming up with nearly $50,000 to pay for … Continue reading

Celebrities Lending a Hand

Madonna is putting her money where her mouth is. The adoption advocate is teaming up with Gucci to raise money for orphans in Malawai. The impoverished southern African nation is where the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie met their 2-year-old son David Banda. (The couple has not officially been named the boy’s parents, but he has been living with them since last year.) According to the 49-year-old singer, she will host a star-studded fundraiser – including a dinner, musical performance and party – on February 6, 2008 to open Gucci’s new store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. “I … Continue reading

Celebrities Running For A Cause

Actress Hilary Swank laced up her running shoes and hit the road for a good cause yesterday. But, the Oscar winner wasn’t exercising for her own benefit; rather she pounded the pavement to help kick off a round-the-world run to raise awareness about the planet’s 1.1 billion people who lack access to clean drinking water. Blue Planet Run is a charity event in which 20 runners (minus Swank) will log 15,200 miles over 95 days. Each participant will run 10 miles at a time and basically put their lives on hold during the 3-months-plus time period in hopes of bringing … Continue reading

The Dream Concert

It’s a star-studded event to honor a man that helped shape history. This fall Radio City Music Hall in New York City will be filled with stars raising money to build a memorial to The Rev. The Concert That Keeps Giving

If you find yourself near the Atlanta area this week—consider yourself lucky. That’s where you will find what is being billed as the “World’s Largest Open Mic Night.” Only instead of one night, the concert will last 10 straight nights. Ten nights of music featuring 500 bands and solo artists performing hits from a variety of genres–rock, R&B, rap, and bluegrass–but, with a couple of twists. First, the tunes will be performed, in order, each of the 500 greatest songs of all time, as ranked by Rolling Stone magazine three years ago. The other twist: the songfest’s goal is to … Continue reading

Calm down. It’s not what you think. Unless you are thinking that one of the world’s greatest tennis players whacked his wife in the face with a tennis racket—by accident! Accidents do happen… but when you happen to make one in front of thousands of people, don’t be surprised to see it end up in newspapers the next day. It’s a lesson Andre Agassi learned Sunday after he inadvertently hit his tennis star wife Steffi Graf in the face with a racket. According to news reports, the incident happened while the couple was rallying gently with two children during a … Continue reading

School Fundraisers

My school just recently completed a magazine fundraiser sale. I see the need for schools to have fundraisers. The money allotted by state and local governments is not enough to purchase computers and instructional materials for schools. However, I always dread the fundraising part of the year. Some parents choose not to let their children participate because they cannot afford to buy items or do not have relatives that can buy items. Other parents are simply against fundraising in general. A few parents just do not wish to take the time to be involved in their child’s education and never … Continue reading

How Embarrassing!

There are a lot of people who are glad they aren’t in Governor Kathleen Blanco’s shoes right now. Not because the Louisiana politician continues to face withering criticism for her response to Hurricane Katrina, rather it has more to do with a recent incident, which involved dining with the embattled governor. Last week at a fundraising auction hosted by a group of business leaders a chance to share a meal with Blanco fetched a winning bid of $1. That’s right—a single dollar. Days later the president of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, in northeastern Louisiana, reportedly called Blanco’s office to … Continue reading
