There Are Different Kinds of Objectives

One of the important elements of setting goals and guidelines for our home business operations is to make sure that we have clear objectives on how to reach those goals. Objectives can be a bit tricky, however, and there are also different sorts of objectives to be concerned with. In my years of grant proposal writing for various nonprofit organizations, I became very experienced in figuring out objectives. There were learning objectives, financial objectives, and time-sensitive objectives. The important thing to remember about objectives is that they need to be quantifiable; they need to be actions and activities that you … Continue reading

Pfft, Who Needs Excuses?

Do you really need an excuse to skip your exercise today? I don’t. Half the time I’m tired and I can easily make the argument for skipping the workout. I’d rather kick back with a cup of coffee and few extra minutes with the book before I get to work rather than hit the treadmill. But the problem with this is that making that choice, skipping that 30 minutes on the treadmill for a cup of coffee will lead to another and then another. By afternoon, I’m beat and want to take a nap. I may even do it. So … Continue reading

Should You Set Personal Benchmarks?

The other day, I wrote about ways to track your productivity and the work that you are doing in your home business by creating categories and subject areas. While this may be helpful for some, there are other ways to periodically check to see if we are moving forward and following our overall plan to build our business. If you have a determined goal and a plan that you are using to grow your business, you can also create “benchmarks” or areas where you can stop, reflect, re-evaluate and check off once you have achieved them. A “benchmark” is really … Continue reading

Creating Categories as a Way of Tracking Your Work

In a home business, one work day can blur and blend into the next. Even if you consider yourself someone who is organized and who keeps decent records, you may find that you do not always track exactly what you are doing during the day very well. Borrowing from a technique used in some “traditional” businesses and corporations, you might consider creating categories for different projects and work and assigning your time and hours to those categories. If I were to categorize my home business efforts, there would probably only be a few: writing work, development and queries, organization, bookkeeping, … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Treasure of Eternal Value

Our First Presidency Message for the month of April comes from our new prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and is entitled, “Treasure of Eternal Value.” He begins his address by telling us of his boyhood, when he enjoyed reading the book “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. He also saw adventure movies with lost treasure and listened to radio programs that featured buried gold. All these things were appealing to a young boy. But later, he heard of a different kind of treasure, one spoken of by the Savior in the Sermon on the Mount, a treasure in Heaven that moths … Continue reading

Habits and Goals

It is nearly the end of the first quarter. This is a great time to check in on your goals and your family’s goals. You may want to incorporate this into your family home evening or your family council meeting on Monday. As you consider your goals and the changes you have or have not made you should look at what is preventing you from achieving your goals. In order for goals to be successful you really need to change your habits. This is the key to changing your behavior. If your family is working on having family prayer and … Continue reading

How Much of Your Own Money Should You Invest?

One of the big realities of starting a home-based business is that, like any small business, we have to invest time and money at the onset in order to get the enterprise off the ground. At the planning stages, therefore, it is important to calculate your initial expenses and try to figure out how much of your own money you are able to invest in order to get the business started… If you have ever done any research on purchasing a franchise or an existing business, you will know that they all have different “up front” capital investment requirements. Some … Continue reading

Celebrate when You Realize Your Dreams

We single parents have a tendency to be rather focused folks. Add to that how we may be striving for some pretty challenging dreams AND the possibility that we might have high expectations and be somewhat hard on ourselves and we may forget to celebrate and acknowledge our accomplishments along the path of life. We need those celebrations, however, and we need to model for our children how to take a break and celebrate when we reach our goals. I have a confession to make, when I finally got my bachelor’s degree as a single parent, it was barely a … Continue reading
