Beauty, Inside or Out?

An article in Southern Cross magazine declared that, ‘on any given day, the average Australian woman draws from a collection of $100 to $400 worth of cosmetic products to look after and make up her face.’ I was astounded and horrified when I read this statement. But what about this one? ‘One of the three women interviewed by the Herald Sun for a “face-off” of beauty products and their costs admitted the total contents of her make-up drawer are worth over $5000.’ Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting Christian women should not wear make up. I don’t feel dressed … Continue reading

Are You a Jekyll and Hyde?

When I told someone about the musical version of Jekyll and Hyde they scathingly said ‘like you would. How could you make a musical of that!’ They continued to look skeptical, when I assured them it was great and contains some lovely songs. The musical is based on the book ‘TheStrange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. The other night I listened to the CD cast recording of Jekyll and Hyde with Anthony Warlow. (One of my favorite singers) We saw a production of this musical last year by the Orange Theatre Company and I was … Continue reading

Clean, But For How Long?

Our puppy loves water. She likes nothing better than to be put in the laundry tub and bathed, unlike our other dog that runs a mile at the mere mention of the word ‘bath.’ She happily gets soaped up, rubbed and rinsed. Since she is low to the ground and is an outdoor some of the time and loves investigating everything, the bathwater ends up an interesting color. Dried and brushed, she looks adorable with her ginger fur tinged with black on ears and around her mouth and on her tail. Unfortunately she doesn’t stay clean long. Too soon she … Continue reading

Should Christian Families Separate?

The Bible says that Christians are to be “salt” and “light” in the world. This can be simply paraphrased: Christians are supposed to stand out. For instance, if a Christian family blends in perfectly with every other family at the park, there may be a problem. The Bible says that God’s people are a “peculiar” people. This does not mean “weird” as I have heard said, but it does mean different. The Bible also says that we are to be “sanctified” or, set apart. The idea of being sanctified is wonderful because it not only implies a separation from something … Continue reading

Christians and Gossip Part 2

In part 1 of this series I discussed Proverbs 11:13 which says that faithful people will conceal gossip, while liars will spread it. We all know in our hearts that gossip is bad and that we shouldn’t have any part of it, but how can we resist? James 3:2-8 gives us a very potent view of how God views gossip: “…If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole … Continue reading
