Cute Handmade Mother’s Day Gifts (Inexpensive, Too!)

Handmade gifts, especially when they mark milestones in your child’s life can be lovely. You’ll find yourself years from now looking at them and remembering back to earlier times. I have a small collection of these gifts, and they always make me smile. For example, there is the wax cast of my first-born’s hand when he was only two. We were at a festival, and the vendor didn’t want to cast anyone under the age of four because children that age tend not to hold still. We insisted and said we would take it, no matter how it came out. … Continue reading

Grandma’s Coming

My mom arrives in Dallas from L.A. today. I am beyond excited. I love living in Texas and the life my husband and I have created. Our toddler daughter is ours because we’re in Texas. Nevertheless, I miss living in Southern California with my large family. I wish that Jessie could spend as much time with her cousins and grandparents as my nieces and nephews do. Jessie knows that Grandma is coming. She’s been walking around the house saying, “Grandma,” for days. What an enjoyable time we will have too. According to the text alert, her plane lands in two-and-a-half … Continue reading

Grandma in the White House

Now that they’ve exhausted the puppy issue, the media has suddenly become obsessed with the prospect of Michelle Obama’s mother becoming the First Grandmother and moving into the White House with the rest of the family come January. Granny’s in the hoooooouse! According to news reports, after some prodding, Michelle convinced her 71-year-old mother Marian Robinson to leave her home on the South Side of Chicago and move to Washington, D.C. with the rest of the Obama’s. Initial reports had the Obama’s looking for new digs for Robinson near the White House, but now some media outlets are reporting that … Continue reading

Celebrate Grandparent’s Day

Mothers and fathers both have a special holiday, so why not grandparents? Many times grandparents have a special impact in their grandchildren’s lives. So this year celebrate Grandparents Day. Which just happens to be this Sunday September 10th. Here are some ideas that you can use to let your grandparents know how important and loved they really are. Record the Memories Schedule a time when your children can go and visit their grandparents. Before hand come up with a list of questions that your child can ask their grandparent. (It’s a good idea to give grandpa and grandma the list … Continue reading

Grandma’s Kitchen Wisdom

My eighty-five-year-old grandma has lived on a farm in Idaho for all of her life, and since she was sixteen years old, has cooked a homemade breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. She had a husband, nine children and plenty of extra farm hands, grand kids, friends and whoever happened by to cook for and she did it all splendidly. She knows a thing or two about cooking and running a kitchen. So I scoop up any wisdom from her that I can. The main thing I’ve learned is that there is nothing better than fresh foods, and eating according … Continue reading

Why Grandparents Spoil Their Grandchildren

Why do grandparents spoil their grandchildren when you were anything but spoiled? The answer I believe consists of three things: Time, Money, and Love. Time Grandparents usually have fewer competing pressures for their time. They are often retired. So they don’t have the stress of a daily job. It also means that they are home during the day and if your child comes to visit they have plenty of time to spend with them. Money My parents have a lot more money now than they ever did when I was a child. Many grandparents find themselves in this situation. Therefore … Continue reading

How to Keep Grandparents from Spoiling their Grandchildren!

First of all just know that there will be some spoiling. John Rosemond said, “I’m convinced it is as proper for grandparents to spoil their children as it is completely improper for their children to do so.” But you can direct the spoiling to your advantage. If you know grandparents are going to buy your children presents give them ideas of what to buy. Make comments like Johnny has grown so much he’s now wearing a size 10, or Mike is really into Playstation racing games, or Allie loves My Little Pony. This will help ensure your kids get presents … Continue reading
