Camping Supply Fun

Part of the fun of a trip for me is preparing for it. It’s amazing what camping supplies are available now. Ovens that fit onto camp stoves, incredible meals in dehydrated form, and sophisticated water purifiers. We didn’t buy all that, but here are two fun new things we did get: I love the look of those classic tin cups for camping. But the cups are too hot to hold when they have anything hot in them, which makes drinking coffee a challenge. Plus, after a few camping trips they tend to rust. Today we got a silicone bowl and … Continue reading

Tips for Scrapbooking Summer Camp Experiences

It seems only fitting with my two teen children off at summer camp for a week long sleepover adventure, that I would take on this topic. There will probably be more to say when they return home as well as layouts to share, and then the younger kids go next month so I am sure they will do things differently. Summer camp is often a great memory of your childhood so it should definitely be scrapbooked. Here are some ideas for doing so. Send a camera with them. It doesn’t have to be a fancy expensive camera, a disposable is … Continue reading

More Tips for Hiking with a Baby

Now that you know how critical it is to plan ahead before embarking on a trip to the wilderness with your baby it’s time to discuss other tips to make your trek memorable. First of all, if you are planning to hike in any one of our country’s awe-inspiring National Parks you should know that there are rules that prohibit the disposal of human waste within 100 feet of a water source or camp site, or within sight of a trail. The National Park Service has also adopted principles from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, which recommend … Continue reading

Tips for Hiking with a Baby

Going on a hike with a 7-year-old is far different than loading up a 7-month-old and hitting the trails. Still, what some would consider a daunting task (and others would call crazy) should not deter you from enjoying the great outdoors with your bundle of joy. The key is preparation. With a little planning and a lot of thought your day in the woods can become a cherished memory. Be Prepared You don’t have to be a Boy Scout to know how vital it is to plan ahead and expect the unexpected. When packing for your trip include the must-haves … Continue reading

Luxury Camping Without the High End Prices

Like mother like daughter I guess. I blame my lack of enthusiasm for camping on my mother who, like many others out there, does all her “camping” at a Hilton. Which is not to say that I have never pitched a tent and lived off the land during the summer months. (You can read about my first camping trip here.) I just don’t seem to embrace the experience of roughing it as much as others. However, there is an entirely different breed of lodging in the great outdoors that I am quite interested in—luxury camping. Did you know that there … Continue reading

Chasing Butterflies in Mexico

Mexico is an ideal winter destination. However, an increasing amount of travelers are opting to forgo fighting to secure a swath of sand on crowded Mexican beaches and instead are heading to the mountains to chase butterflies. Thanks to the spectacular yearly migration of millions of orange-and-black-winged monarch butterflies, eco-tourism packages that include rare butterfly experiences are growing in popularity. To put in perspective how amazingly breathtaking these butterflies are consider that cars passing the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve sometimes have to slow to speeds of a couple of miles per hour to avoid hitting the swarms that contain tens … Continue reading

Packing for Camping

We are busy packing for a camping trip. We haven’t gone camping as a family in a long time. Our nine year old twins are very excited. They are running around, laughing, jumping, yelling, and asking a zillion questions. I’m trying hard to keep patient. I’m also trying to remember that packing for a trip is fun for them, not a chore to be gotten through like it is for us. Tonight we went to the store to buy camping food, supplies for s’mores, hot chocolate, cider, things for dinner and breakfast, and of course some cookies. It wouldn’t be … Continue reading
