Hanging a Picture

I wanted to share my newfound knowledge with you. It’s nothing profound, really, but it is rather useful. What is this knowledge of which I speak? Well, it’s how to hang things from your walls and ceilings. Now, we live in a townhouse that has metal studs. This might not seem like a problem, but it has stymied us for years. You can get stud finders that will find your wooden studs when you run them across a wall – they beep. Then you can insert screws directly into the drywall at that location and it makes it simple to … Continue reading

More Ways to Save and Benefits of Living on One Income

Yesterday we looked at some ways to save money while living on one income. Here are some more benefits of living on one income and ways to save money. Buy generic products. This might include pharmaceuticals which are often cheaper than the brand names as well as grocery items. Just a word of caution on this: If you or your spouse is watching your weight, sometimes the generic product has a higher calorie or sugar content, so check labels carefully. It’s really a bit of trial and error. We buy a lot of generic products but on some, I definitely … Continue reading

More Inexpensive Home Decorating Ideas

Last week we looked at some inexpensive home decorating ideas. Here are some more. Use your photographs as a decoration. One way is to make a collage of photos from your family’s life. I used to have one large wall in our family room dedicated to photos of our family. Eventually it spread to two walls. You could track our family, and the various homes we’d lived in and pets we’d had, through that wall. I bought simple inexpensive frames and then rather than only put half a dozen or so photos in the allotted spots. I took the sectioned … Continue reading

Freestyle Decorating – TV Review

Right now, like many young families, we don’t have a lot of money for new furniture or decorator items. I still want our house to be pretty though – inviting, and comfortable. That’s why I like the Freestyle decorating show on HGTV. They design rooms without spending any money! The earlier shows were hosted by Aaron Foster. The current shows are hosted by Evan Farmer, who you might recognize from The Learning Channel’s show While You Were Out. On each show, three rooms are redecorated by professional designers using the furniture and decorating accessories that the homeowners already have. The … Continue reading

Getting the Guest Room Ready for Guests

You’ll often hear that each room should have a separate function, and that makes sense if you have plenty of space. However, if your guest room does double duty, say as a home office, you can still make it into a comfortable space for company. By making the guest area the focus of the room, your guests won’t feel like they’re sleeping in your office. Stand in the doorway of the guest room and see what you notice first (a tried and true trick for discovering focal points). If it doesn’t look like a guest room from the entrance, a … Continue reading

Home Color Trends for Fall 2007

Are we talking about fall already? Yep. Pantone recently released a report on color trends for the home in fall 2007. There are some surprises. While there are still vivid reds and oranges and deep browns, there is an interesting mix of other hues as well. The reds are deep “red pepper” colors while the oranges are richer than the usual pumpkin pie colors. Brown has gone past the caramel neutrals and is expressed in cocoa and dark chocolate colors. The other colors range from purplish pinks that seem to have been plucked from flowers like lilacs, while the other … Continue reading

Some Decorating Tips for New Homes and Temporary Residences

Don’t have much money left for artwork after purchasing a new home? Afraid to hang anything on the walls lest you’ll be forced to spend hours patching holes when moving from a temporary residence or rental? Try some of these ideas: Glossy magazines, books, and calendars often contain great photos and other images that can be used as artwork. Add some glitz to an inexpensive frame with a quick coat of shiny paint and frame a great picture from an old calendar, coffee table book, or magazine. Art magazines are also great sources for prints. This idea also works well … Continue reading

Home Decorating: Get Ready for Easter!

Easter is coming soon. Are you having company? Even if you aren’t entertaining guests for the holiday, you may want to add a few festive touches around the house. I love centerpieces. They are great for holiday decorating. You can whip up something cute in just a few minutes, for very little cost, and it makes a great impact. Being at the center of attention (or at least the center of the table) does make a difference but the impact is also due to the creativity involved. Use your imagination and when possible, use stuff you already have around the … Continue reading
