Homemade Ice Cream Fun

Last weekend, we decided to buy an ice cream maker. In some ways, it seems kind of silly to go to the trouble of making homemade ice cream when the store probably carries a hundred different and delicious varieties. I just like the idea of occasionally making our own ice cream, though. I like for the kids to know where things come from, and how they are made. I also like being able to make things from real ingredients instead of long chemicals that we can’t even pronounce. Making our own ice cream is fun, and it is not that … Continue reading

Dairy-licious and Healthy?

I’m stuffed. Yesterday our playgroup attended an ice cream social at a local park (our city hosts several of these events throughout the summer). Ice cream treats for 25 cents each. Now that’s a real treat. Of course, my 3-year-old daughter wanted one of everything: Fudgesicles, Drumsticks, Creamsicles, Choco-Tacos, ice cream sandwiches… there had to have been more than a dozen types of ice cream treats there. I told her she could pick two of her favorites. Big mistake. Long story short—her eyes turned out to be bigger than her stomach and I ended up downing three ice cream treats. … Continue reading

Free Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! If it wasn’t for Rocky Road, I’d be thin as a rail! Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. But I know I’m far above the national average in consumption. It’s “only” 5.7 gallons of ice cream each. That seems awfully low to me! When we have ice cream, we eat three half gallons among the seven of us (okay, three 1.75 quarts – cheapskates!). I’d guess our consumption is probably closer to twice the national average. I’m eating someone else’s, I suppose. Premium ice creams are on the rise; brands like … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: How have you been?

The little hiatus is over here at Families.com and I would love to tell you that during the break my eating and exercise routine has been on-point, but I do not fancy myself a liar, so I will say no such thing. To be honest, I have been having a rough stretch recently with sweets, cookies, donuts and soda entering my body at a way-too frequent clip. I have also been seen eating potato chips (which I do not really even enjoy) and ice cream (Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint – which I enjoy very much. I am helpless to … Continue reading

What’s Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor? Baskin-Robbins B1G1F Coupon

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! My kids still get excited to hear the electronic music of the grossly-overpriced ice cream man coming down the street. I think it’s a conditioned response, a la Pavlov’s dogs. They hear the music, and they start salivating. The truck comes in sight and their brain signals them that they’re hungry. It forgets, of course, that they’ve just eaten a lunch big enough for two construction workers. When there’s a sale going on, we have easily gone through ten half gallons in a week. My kids are usually disappointed to … Continue reading

Ideas For Leftover Halloween Candy

Ding. Ding. Time for round three of trick-or-treating. We happen to live in a state where trick-or-treat times vary from county to county. Our community borders three counties so we had trick-or-treaters visit Saturday, Sunday, and more will come today. Which means I had to stock up on massive amounts of candy. Inevitably we will have leftovers and once I add that to my own daughter’s haul and “extras” from my husband’s office we’re talking serious candy overload. If you find yourself in a similar situation (oh woe is us), you may be looking for something productive to do with … Continue reading

Banana Ice Cream

I love ice cream. But of all the flavors available (and trust me, there are a ton on the market today), banana remains my favorite. I’m not much for chunky ice cream. When I buy Ben and Jerry’s “Chunky Monkey,” I usually pick around the chocolate chunks and walnuts. I know, I know—what?! Who does that? By making ice cream at home, I can make it my way. I add only the ingredients my family and I like and voila! It’s perfect every time. This recipe was made using a Hamilton Beach Ice Cream Maker, but it will work for … Continue reading

Peanut Butter Oreo Cookie Ice Cream

I was strolling at the outlet mall this weekend when I saw it–an ice cream maker for $29. It looked great. No ice needed, no salt, nothing. Just freeze the little bowl then pour in the ingredients and voila! Ice cream! So I bought it and took it home. After all, the temperatures here in Southern California have been at an all time high and what sounds better than ice cream on a scorching hot day? I froze the canister and 24-hours later on the dot (okay, 21 hours…I just couldn’t wait any longer) I was pouring the mixture in … Continue reading

Banana Split Ice Cream

I love banana splits, so when I saw this recipe, I knew it was something I had to try! It makes my mouth water just writing about it. There is fruit in it too, so while it is ice cream, at least the little ones will be getting something healthy from it. For this recipe, you will need white sugar, all purpose flour, salt, one quart of white milk, one quart of chocolate milk, one 12 ounce can of evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, two 10 ounce packages of frozen strawberries, three bananas, and one 15 ounce can of crushed … Continue reading
