Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

Schedule, schedule, schedule…it is the word that has been running through my mind for a good week now. That’s because I am beginning to learn even more the importance of this word when you are running a home business. Of course, I have always believed in having a schedule. I believe in scheduling your days to start and end at a certain time (if possible), and to even schedule in your breaks. But one of the things that I have come to realize recently is that scheduling needs to go beyond this. I need to schedule time for other things, … Continue reading

Why Multi-Tasking While Writing Doesn’t Work

I am a multi-tasker. I can rarely focus on just one thing. In fact, I sometimes come up with strange ways to accomplish things. For instance, on a cleaning day I might read one chapter of a book, clean a room, read another chapter and then clean another room. Others might choose to do all their cleaning at one time and then sit down to read a book. Not me, I have to always be switching back and forth between things. So this has carried into my work as a writer and let me tell you, I am finding more … Continue reading

Community

This past week I’ve been focused less on my work as a teacher (preparing a syllabus), less on my work towards qualifying exam testing (a lot of reading), and much more towards my dissertation. I’m not sure if my mind simply can’t handle one thing for an extended period of time (quite possible) or if I’ve consiously chosen to focus on the big picture (maybe subconsciously) but I’ve really come to value a sense of community. When my mind switched gears towards a large paper I started having questions and needing them answered. That led me to the value of … Continue reading

Pre-Writing

I’ve started throwing away what I write. Really. I’ve started writing and writing and writing and then deleting what I’ve written or just opening another blank document and starting again. I might write about the same thing or I might write about something completely new. I might write about nothing or I might be inspired by a particular quote. There are various methods of writing but I’ve settled on this one. I’ve never been one for highly structured outlines prior to writing my papers. My brain simply doesn’t think like that. I don’t think in “beginning, middle, end” linearity or … Continue reading
