Inmates, Stray Dogs, and Rehabilitation

Last night one of the local news stations reported what started out to be a sad story about bad dog owners leaving dogs out in the cold to fend for themselves. The reporter was following around animal control officers who were on “cold dog patrol.” They round up dogs left in yards with no food or water and very little or no shelter. In some cases the dogs have been completely abandoned as their owners have since moved on. Concerned neighbors called in to make sure the dogs got help. I was happy to hear there are laws against this. … Continue reading

O.J. Simpson Headed for the Slammer—Is it Justice Delayed?

Can you really call it a coincidence? Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman in one of the most publicized trials of the 20th century, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint. Late yesterday a jury found the former football star guilty on all 12 counts, including kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges stemming from Simpson’s decision to storm into a Las Vegas hotel room with a couple of associates–guns drawn–in an effort to seize several game balls, plaques and photos … Continue reading

Getting Married Behind Bars

Ever wondered how people who are incarcerated get married? Do they have a ceremony? How do they get things like the marriage license? And what about guests or the reception. Do they have a reception? How many guests can attend a wedding behind bars? I have to admit the logistics of getting wed from jail had never crossed my mind. But then that muse of mine, Jade Walker, sent me the link to a wild story about just such things. It was called “Marrying at Rikers Island: Few Frills, Many Rules” by Christine Hauser which was published by the New … Continue reading

Rapper to Wed in Jail

Michele and I have blogged about a lot of celebrity weddings. There was the over the top wedding of Eva Longoria and Tony Parker in Paris. There was the extravagant wedding of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban down under. And just this past week, there was the low key wedding of Beyonce and Jay-Z at his Tribeca penthouse apartment. But, I don’t think either of us have blogged about a wedding in prison – until now! Rapper Remy Ma (real name Remy Smith) is a Grammy nominated recording artist who just happens to be sitting in Rikers Island jail for … Continue reading

The Nicest Jail You’ll Ever Spend the Night In

How many visitors to Boston can say they paid to sleep in a jail cell? Okay, former jail cell. Beantown’s newly opened Liberty Hotel was once home to some of the city’s most notorious prisoners. Now, for $320 a night (minimum) you can catch some zzz’s near iron-railing balconies where guards used to stand watch over inmates more than 100 years ago. What a difference a few decades can make. The 156-year-old stone structure is now home to a luxury hotel—the product of a 5-year, $150 million renovation. And you can forget about looking for remnants of dingy décor, the … Continue reading

Paris Hilton Receives Royal Treatment In Jail

Just when you thought the Pop Culture blog had become a Paris-free zone-—BAM-—the celebutante strikes again. The hotel heiress is making headlines again, though this time it’s not for shenanigans that took place outside of her jailhouse cell, but rather what occurred when the party princess was behind bars. According to news reports, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into allegations that the 26-year-old millionairess received special treatment during her 23 days in jail for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. What? Paris Hilton received star treatment behind bars? Come on… In all seriousness, according … Continue reading

Free At Last—Paris Walks

While most of us were nestled in bed (please don’t tell me you stayed up to watch it unfold), one of the country’s most talked about jailbirds took flight shortly after midnight Pacific Time. Paris Hilton is once again a free woman. With a huge grin plastered on her face the hotel heiress strolled out of jail and into her mother’s arms. The 26-year-old party princess was dressed down in an olive jacket, white shirt, tight jeans, and her hair was pulled back in a braided ponytail (reminiscent of her days on the farm during the first season of her … Continue reading

Princess Paris On King

Okay all you Paris Hilton fans… ready your TiVo’s for Wednesday night. According to the hotel heiress herself, that’s when she will appear live on CNN’s “Larry King Live” for her first post-jail interview. CNN confirmed the socialite’s appearance and said that she will be on for the entire hour. The news comes less than 24 hours after both NBC (the network that had originally booked Hilton’s first post-jail interview) and ABC pulled out of talks with the incarcerated blonde. Both networks were reportedly embarrassed by reports that they were willing to pay the Hilton family for materials related to … Continue reading

All Paris All The Time

Believe it or not Paris Hilton has almost completed her debt to society (well, at least for driving with a suspended license). In less than 60 hours the hotel heiress will be sprung from the slammer… and then the real (media) circus will begin. Speaking of the media… The New York Post is reporting that NBC has agreed to fork over as much as $1 million for Paris Hilton’s first post-jail interview. Network execs say the interview will appear on the “Today” show and be conducted by Meredith Vieira the day after the blonde socialite is freed. If you are … Continue reading

Paris Calls Barbara

NEWS FLASH: Paris Hilton says she has “found God” and vows to no longer “act dumb.” Hmm… so it was all an act? Or was it an act of God? Let’s ask Barbara Walters. Seems as though the publicity-seeking socialite struck again yesterday when she phoned “View” creator Barbara Walters to get her side of the story out to her adoring fans. About an hour ago, Walters told her co-hosts (and a live television audience) that Hilton “sounded tired but totally aware of what she was saying” (alluding to the fact that many news reports said the hotel heiress was … Continue reading
