Where did all the Recalls go?

Is it just me? After constant reports of recalls on everything from ground beef and toys to pet food, it suddenly seems rather quiet. There are still recalls and tainted or otherwise dangerous products, but it seems like there should be some follow up to the issues that created such a stir. Concerning the ground beef, at least one company went out of business. Still, there are many others out there that produce and sell this food, and the question is what has been done to prevent future problems? Is the lead paint scare over? What kind of dog food … Continue reading

Check Christmas Decorations before packing away

If you haven’t yet taken down and packed away all your Christmas decorations for another year, now is a good time to check them all out. First, carefully examine glass or ceramic items for cracks or chips. Make repairs if possible or dispose of the potentially dangerous item. Also, check out lighted elements and strings of lights. If there are any exposed wires, if you had any trouble with the lights during the holidays, if any cords or plugs are damaged, it’s wise to replace them. They don’t cost that much, and the few dollars to replace them is well … Continue reading

What to Do If You’re Concerned about Lead Paint in Your Pet’s Products

Yesterday I wrote how children’s toys aren’t the only thing testing positive for lead paint. So are pet products, like food and water bowls and bird cages. Here’s some things to keep in mind if you’re worried about pet products you have in your household: 1) Check labels. Made in China instantly makes me wary anymore, but that doesn’t automatically mean lead’s in the paint. Also, some products specifically indicated paint used contains lead. 2) If labels are no help and you want to determine if your pet’s bowls or toys contain lead, buy a testing kit. (Options include the … Continue reading

Lead Paint a Concern in Pet Products Too?

All the coverage about lead paint contaminating some kids’ toys got me to thinking: China also manufactures pet toys and bowls. Are they using the same paint on those as well? It stands to reason they would. I haven’t seen anything on the news about this yet –at least not in my area– so I Googled it and found that some others had my same train of thought. Pet Products DO Contain Lead Paint Albuquerque’s KOAT 7 conducted an investigation into the matter using an at-home lead testing kit. They tested a yellow dog ball, a green ceramic pet bowl, … Continue reading

Worried about Buying Toys for Christmas?

I don’t want people to panic and I’m not trying to convince people to refuse to go Christmas shopping or anything like that, but I’m still uneasy about buying toys for the kids in my life with all the toy recalls lately. Are you? It’s not like this has only been an issue with one or two toys, some kind of fluke, there have been massive recalls and some of them quite serious. The AquaDots recall was quite unsettling but I’m not over all the lead paint just yet either. It seems to be used in many items, things I’d … Continue reading

Product Recalls: Toy Safety Information

With all the lead paint concerns and other recall issues on toys and other products, it’s become a bit daunting to shop for Christmas gifts for little ones. With the Christmas shopping season in full swing, it pays to have as much information as possible before purchasing toys for children on our lists. While some stores have recall notices right in the toy aisle (and often aisle after aisle of such notices) notes taped to shelves aren’t too reassuring. Here are some other sources of toy safety information that will hopefully help us make safer choices: CPSC Toy Hazard Recalls … Continue reading
