If I Can Only Stay Healthy

Thank goodness I am a fairly healthy person by nature, but I know that when I commiserate with other single parents one of the things that always comes up is how we all pray for health. Most of us have figured out how to stay on top of things on a fairly regular basis—or at least hold our worlds together. When we get sick, however, it can make staying on top of things an incredible struggle—if not completely impossible. Staying healthy is key to a single parent’s survival! Of course, it is not always possible. We are as susceptible to … Continue reading

Is There a Home Business Lifestyle?

Recently, someone told me that she could never start her own home business because she just didn’t subscribe to the right “lifestyle.” For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what she meant–I know several different people who work from their home businesses at least part of the time, and we are all leading very different lives. It got me to wondering if there are “lifestyles” that are more conducive to the home business than others? I have known home business owners with and without kids, at all different stages in their “careers”, and those who had all sorts … Continue reading

Pledging To Live a More Frugal Lifestyle

New Year’s resolutions are being made all over the world tonight, as we vow to make changes in our lives and goals to set for the year. Last year I made a few resolutions or goals and I stuck to them for most of the year. This made a huge difference in my decision to make new ones this year. I pledge to live a more frugal life. I pledge this exact same thing every single year. Most of my friends think it is a strange goal, since I already appear to be living a very frugal lifestyle. I pinch … Continue reading

Living in a Potluck & Barbecue Society

Despite the attempts to make society healthier, we still live in a potluck and barbecue society. Potluck has a lot to do with being too busy to fix balanced meals every night and always being in a rush. Part of fitness is keeping your body and mind on a healthy track. Sit down dinners are a healthy choice because you have to think about what you are preparing, put some time into the preparation and then you increase the benefits because you sit down together, share dinner conversation and strengthen the bonds of family. Splurge Free In our world of … Continue reading

What Happens When You Aren’t Being Frugal?

So, you have signed up for all the greatest cheapskate newsletters, you’ve spent countless hours pouring over the frugal blog here at families, and sharing in all the great deals going on over in the Deals Forums. You have probably even read articles and books, talked to others and basically done everything and anything to figure out how to save every penny possible. That is great! I am extremely proud of you! But what happens when you are less than frugal? What happens when one day you purchase that $80.00 sweater you have been eying in the store window? Or … Continue reading

Overheard From a New Mother on Line: “When Is My Life Supposed to Return to Normal?”

I wanted to interrupt. I wanted to step in like some bossy, snoopy, old Mrs. Kravitz (the nosey neighbor on “Bewitched”) and tell this sweet young mother that her life was NOT going to return to any old version of normal—instead, parenthood was going to bring constantly changing, newer and newer, unpredictable versions of normal… But who am I to offer unsolicited advice, really? I still wonder what my life will be like in a few years when my kids have all flown the coop, what things might have been like had they turned out differently, and what grown up … Continue reading

Scrapbooking is a Lifestyle

Scrapbooking is a Lifestyle Once you become a scrapbooker, it seems that you start to look at life a little differently. Some things just are not the same once you start to scrapbook. I would love to share a few of my observations about scrapbookers. Let me know if you agree. Trips to Target (and most other stores) often inspire layouts ideas. When I enter a store it seems that there is almost always something that catches my eye and I makes me think about how cool it would be to translate it into a layout element. Things that I … Continue reading

Marriage Debate? No Debate Here

Heather and I agree on a marriage debate topic! How did that happen? Well, it took something extreme, but nonetheless we agree. Heather discussed the issue, requiring proof of procreation to maintain a legally recognized marriage. She mentioned how nonsensical the arguments for this initiative are, but I’ll go one step further. Not only is it ridiculous to attempt to force procreation, but to also demand a certain timeframe is more than absurd. Government functions do not include telling people they must have children or when. The hypocrisy here is not on the side of those who maintain that marriage … Continue reading

Insurance As A Lifestyle

This is the first Blog of many where Insurance as a Lifestyle will be the focus. Yes, I hear the laughing! How on earth can Insurance be a Lifestyle and who is the crazy person suggesting that insurance might have anything to do with Lifestyle? My hope is to help change this attitudes and share with my readers How and Why insurance is and should be part of any successful, productive and safe lifestyle. With nearly every choice we as human beings make there are consequences. As parents we try to teach our children that running into the street is … Continue reading

Have You Sworn Off Marriage (or other relationships)?

I’ve seen and talked to many people who swear they will never marry or never get married again, or even never have another serious relationship. In doing research for this column, I find entire websites devoted to not getting married or seriously involved. There’s nothing wrong with that, since it is of course a personal decision. However, it is a good idea to examine why you feel that way. For some, having been hurt badly in a previously relationship is enough to make them give up. This is an especially big issue for those who have been hurt many times. … Continue reading
