Confident People are More Fit

A new study claims the more confident you are, the more likely you are to engage in physical fitness activities. Canadian researchers studied more than 5,000 locals between the ages of 15-79 and found that people who have high self-esteem are in better shape than those who have poor self-perception. The study concluded that psychological factors are the most important barriers to an active lifestyle. Study participants, who were categorized as “confident,” said that they participated in a total of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three or four times a week, and a total of an hour of light … Continue reading

Have You Let Yourself Go?

One big complaint many spouses have, is that their husbands or wives have let themselves go. This may mean gaining weight, becoming soft and out of shape, not taking care of health, being cranky due to lack of sleep, or a host of other things. It happens before we know it. Five pounds turns into fifteen. That touch of gray begins to look like we haven’t had a touch up in months (often because we haven’t). That skipped haircut leaves split ends, making hair dull and lifeless. Skipping the moisturizer leads to rough, dry, patches of skin. It’s not just … Continue reading

Getting My Mind Right

On May 24, 2006, I weighed 272 pounds at my doctor’s office. That was an all time high for me. I have had to fight my weight for the last forty years, I am sixty years old. When I was younger, 235 was a high weight and 185 was an ideal weight. I was six feet tall, or slightly under, depending on who measured me. Today, I have been whittled down by the years and I stand at 5’10. I do have a large frame. My weight that day really scared me for several related reasons. I was less than … Continue reading

Becoming an Adoptive Parent: Adjustments I Had to Make

There were a number of lifestyle changes that I had to make in order to adopt five children. Throughout my working career, I always said that the one thing that I was going to do when I retired was sleep late every day. That thought is now officially a joke. We have five boys and only one of them is a late sleeper. At least I do not have to get up in the night for baby feeding any more. I also thought that perhaps I would get to play a little golf after I quit working. I have given … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Is Anyone Losing Weight Now?

I’m curious—who out there is losing weight right now? Who is resisting the temptations of holiday goodies? Who is opting for spiced tea rather than a peppermint mocha with whipped cream? I want to hear from you! I’m still on my cookie strike…mostly. I did eat one today, but that was because I created a recipe (check it out on the food blog) for Honey Granola Cookies With Apricots and I had to try one. But that’s all I tried. Just one. I did not continually make my way back to the kitchen, daring my will power to take over. … Continue reading

Happiness is the Key to Fitness Success

Shiny, happy people – do you remember this song? I’ve been racking my brain all morning trying to remember the name of the group that sang it without actually looking it up on the net. Sometimes I think the ease with which we can Google something takes all the fun out of trying to remember something. Yes, it can be frustrating trying to capture that elusive thought that seems to dance just out of reach – but as frustrating as it is – I have fun trying to sort through the card file that is my brain chock full of … Continue reading
