Teen Challenges: Lying

This blog is a kickoff to a little series I will be doing on teen challenges.  While some of the issues we face in parenting teenagers are different for each family, there are many common ones that we deal with. So let’s start off with a big one—the juicy lies that sometimes come out of our teen’s mouths.  Oh, this is one that I have the most difficulty in dealing with.  Because I have taught my children from early on that the consequences will be much more severe if caught lying. By now my teens should have figured out that … Continue reading

Lying and Your Home Business

Teeny lies, little white lies, and big whoppers–do lies have a place in business? Well, pick up any newspaper and read any business section and you would think that lies and business go hand-in-hand. But, what about in your small, home-based business? Will telling even the smallest lies help or hurt your business overall (not to mention, how will they affect your karma?). When you read those business articles and reports on CEOs who seem to get away with murder, not to mention plenty of lies along the way, it can start to seem like lies are just as much … Continue reading

Pinocchio (1940)

The second ever made of Walt Disney’s famous films, “Pinocchio” is based on the book by Carlo Collodi. Having read the book, I find the movie to be much more child-friendly. The original was never meant to be a child’s story and dealt with some harsh themes, such as starvation and Pinocchio’s eventual hanging. It’s been changed quite a bit since it first appeared. Pinocchio is a wooden marionette carved by Geppetto, an elderly woodcarver who has always longed for a son. He carefully crafts the puppet, and then says that he wished Pinocchio could be a real boy. The … Continue reading

Christians and Gossip Part 2

In part 1 of this series I discussed Proverbs 11:13 which says that faithful people will conceal gossip, while liars will spread it. We all know in our hearts that gossip is bad and that we shouldn’t have any part of it, but how can we resist? James 3:2-8 gives us a very potent view of how God views gossip: “…If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole … Continue reading

Christians and Gossip Part 1

We’ve all had it happen: A friend walks up to you or calls you and tells you a juicy piece of information that sends your head spinning. You immediately think of a person you would like to share the information with and then, your friend’s final words come to you, “Oh, and please don’t say anything to anybody. I don’t know if I was supposed to tell anyone or not.” Ah yes, we’ve all found ourselves in the gossip-mill before. It’s funny, or maybe it’s not so funny, that when we hear a piece of gossip we have a tremendous … Continue reading

Dishonesty and the Little White Lies

What are little white lies? I’m sure all of us have used them from time to time. Aren’t they the little half-truths that aren’t intended to hurt anyone? Satan is full of these deceptive sugar coated lies and most of us may find ourselves eating them (some of us literally) on a daily basis. It’s true not all white lies are done with malicious motives. Making up a story to conceal a surprise party, or telling your children that Santa brought some of the Christmas gifts for them, are hard for me to personally justify. I struggle with the deceit … Continue reading

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

Lindsay Lohan stars in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,” the story of a girl named Mary who whom life is just too boring. She craves adventure and excitement, to the point where she’ll create the reality she wants if it doesn’t exist. She’s even changed her name, requesting to be known as Lola. When she moves to a small town from her home in New York City, she expects to be at least somewhat popular. After all, she’s from the big city, she has the right clothes, and it’s to be expected, right? But she’s very wrong. Her new … Continue reading

Gossip

There’s nothing like a good piece of juicy gossip to get one feeling important or energized. Do you feel this way? Many do and it’s possible there is some gossip on you out there, whether it’s true or not. What constitutes gossip? The American Heritage Dictionary’s definition states, “Rumor or talk of a personal, sensational, or intimate nature.” So does this mean any personal information? I have yet to meet a single person who has not gossiped a bit in one way or another. I too struggle with gossip. Not all of it is intended to be negative. When personal … Continue reading
