Runners Collapse in Race Due to Lack of Water

This past week the city I live in, Milwaukee, hosted its “Rock ‘n Sole” event, a half marathon and 10K race that is sponsored by the largest musical festival around, “Summerfest.” The temperature was 85 degrees and the humidity was high. But runners are used to this and so they manage to get through it. That is, if they remain hydrated. What was supposed to be a day of fun and fitness turned into medical emergencies as more than 20 runners had to be taken to a hospital. All required IVs for hydration. There was an additional 50 runners who … Continue reading

The 10% Rule for Running Doesn’t Prevent Injuries

Have you heard of the “10 percent rule” when it comes to running? It’s unclear as to who came up with it and when, but it is a way to help reduce the risk of injury for runners. The way it works is that you should increase your mileage to no more than 10% each week. There is no specific starting point so that is up to you. But let’s say you are running 20 minutes a day. After one week you should increase that time by 10%. This is a way for runners to safely increase the distance they … Continue reading

Running in the Dark: Be Noticed!

Like many people with busy schedules, running in the very early morning hours or after nightfall seem to be a convenient time for me to run. Mine is now grown, but I remember the days when the house was silent and I would get up to fit my morning exercise in. There was something very special about that time of day. There was nobody asking me things and I got a chance to do a lot of thinking without any interruptions. I had my cup of coffee in silence and it gave me a chance to “get my head together”. … Continue reading

Clothes and Weight Loss

I have to admit that my weight loss has been on the slow side. But because my main goal is to make my lungs and heart stronger, and to make this routine really part of my normal life, I am okay with that. Slow and stead wins the race, right? I’m still not counting calories, and I still don’t own a scale, but I do have two things to substitute. I have a better awareness of exactly what I am putting into my body and when, so there is little mindless eating. And instead of a scale, I have my … Continue reading

To Run or To Run-Walk

When I was training for my first marathon I briefly considered using legendary runner-turned coach Jeff Galloway’s run-walk method. Contrary to what you might think, the technique doesn’t include taking walking breaks when fatigue hits; rather it requires taking brief walk breaks when you’re not. Which is exactly why I decided against incorporating it into my marathon training. I am the type of person who finds it nearly impossible to consistently stop and start, especially during a race. Which is not to say that Galloway’s method is not a proven winner. There are millions of runners out there who swear … Continue reading

Finding Your Perfect Pace

Shortly after registering for my first marathon (way back in 1999) I joined a local running group called: Pacesetters. Little did I know how appropriate the group’s name would prove to be, especially for someone like me who knew nothing about prepping to run 26.2 miles. If you are an avid runner then you’ve likely found your perfect pace. It’s the speed where you feel as though you could run from New York to Boston without stopping. I refer to it as running in “the zone,” and always thought it had more to do with psychological factors than physiological, but … Continue reading

The Ultimate Stairmaster

Forget about those fancy elliptical machines that supposedly place less stress on your knees, if you want a high-intensity, calorie-burning exercise, then find the nearest flight of stairs. Stairs are everywhere, but most fitness lovers tend to pass them by in favor of high-tech gym equipment. But, why? Stairs don’t cost a dime to use and provide a workout that returns maximum value in minimum time. Studies show stair climbing gives you more bang for your buck because of the vertical component still, fitness experts say the exercise doesn’t have a big following. Perhaps, it’s because most exercisers don’t realize … Continue reading
