Unexpected Gifts

When I got married 10 years ago, I received a wedding present that was unexpected. It was a beautiful nativity. Since I got married in July, Christmas was definitely not on my mind, and I had never even thought of the fact that I would want a nativity to display in our home. It became my favorite wedding gift that first Christmas that we were married because I realized it was something that I did want, although it was unexpected. It was also something that I could never have afforded at the time, so I appreciated it all the more. … Continue reading

Is Your Life Too Noisy?

We had stake conference this past weekend, and as usual, my husband and I were dreading going with our three small children. It is always difficult to keep them quiet and happy for two straight hours. But, they did great, and I actually heard some of the talks! Our stake president spoke last, and I really liked what he had to say. He shared a story about his teenage niece. He said that at a family Christmas gathering, his kids, and lots of their cousins were hanging out together in the front room of his house. He wasn’t sure what … Continue reading

Mormons and Genealogy

One question that many new genealogists have, after seeing that many great genealogy resources are connected with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is why genealogy is so important to Mormons. For Mormons, family life is important, eternal, in fact, and it is central to God’s plan. Since family is an eternal structure, baptisms may be conducted for deceased family members. Genealogy research enters the picture when Mormons trace their roots in search of ancestors who died without learning about the Mormon Gospel. It is these ancestors who are then baptized by proxy in the temple, so … Continue reading

More Coloring Pages

If you have small children, you are probably familiar with the idea of a Sunday bag. Like most parents, we carry a canvas bag to church with appropriate quiet activities for our kids. One of my kids’ favorite activities is the coloring book I “make” by printing out pictures from the Friend. I blogged on this idea back in December, so I won’t repeat myself. However, while I was looking for something online a few weeks back, I found a great website I would love to share with you. I have found it to be very helpful, and I think … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: June 3-9

This week, we covered topics ranging from postpartum depression to ways to keep our youth busy over the lazy, hazy summer days. And, believe it or not, we actually had a full week of Gospel Doctrine and Relief Society lesson blogs! All in all, it’s been an interesting week! Gospel Doctrine In Signs of Destruction, we looked at some of the signs of the Second Coming of Jesus. In Blessings of the Elect, we talked about some of the positive blessings that we will receive when Christ returns. In Who Are the Elect?, we pondered how we might be able … Continue reading

LDS General Conference Scripture Citation Index

Have you ever wondered what the modern church leaders have said about a particular scripture verse or story? Now you have no reason to be curious. Two BYU faculty members, Richard C. Galbraith and Stephen W. Liddle, have created an online citation database that links scriptures to Conference talks. This web site can further enhance your daily scripture study, or help you prepare for lessons or talks. Galbraith and Liddle brought their site online a few years ago and have been working constantly to improve it. Rather than searching for a General Conference talk by subject, you can click on … Continue reading

Top 10 Things You Don’t Want to Hear From Your Kids During Sacrament

The chapel is quiet. Every head is reverently bowed as men and women around you ponder the Savior’s atonement. Even the children seem to grasp the solemn nature of the divine gift from above. Then, suddenly, to your horror, your child makes an announcement that echoes through the silent room. Kids have a tendency to be oblivious to things that make their parents blush. They also seem to enjoy making the pronouncements in as a loud a voice as possible, particularly when everyone else can hear them. If you’re lucky, your kids won’t think to make one of these pronouncements: … Continue reading

An Example to Your Children

Most of us know or have been told that, as parents, our best teaching tool is our example. I, personally, grew up in a household where the mantra was ‘do as I say, not as I do’. My mom usually said this in a joking tone of voice, but she did sincerely mean it. I, myself, have caught myself in typical parenting blunders – my favorite was when I lightly swatted one of my toddlers’ bottoms while saying “We don’t hit!” That one caused an entire shift in parenting technique. A close second occurs on long car trips, when I … Continue reading

Top 10 Things I Wish I Knew About Raising LDS Kids

Before my first child was born, I did everything I could possibly do to prepare for the changes in my life. I read every parenting book I could put my hands on, and convinced myself that I was prepared – I even knew that there would be a lot of things I couldn’t prepare for. I was ready. I was set. Then, suddenly, I was a mom. And I realized that none of the parenting books could even come close to adequately describing reality. But the most interesting discovery I made as my babies morphed into toddlers was that none … Continue reading

Standing for Something — Gordon B. Hinckley

Gordon B. Hinckley is the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is revered by members of that church, myself included, as a prophet. But even if you aren’t a Mormon, there is a goodness in him that you can’t deny, a kindness that transcends differences in spiritual belief. Leaders of the other denominations in Salt Lake City who have worked with President Hinckley on various projects hold him in high regard, even though they do not believe as he does. In the year 2000, President Hinckley released a book that would quickly become a New … Continue reading
