Each new day is beautiful and special, and as a mother, you look at life in a whole new way. It truly is miraculous. But, there is something else that comes along with babies that you have to be careful about. It is letting that baby control the world in which you and your husband now live. There is always an adjustment period that comes along with each new life you bring into your family. For a … Continue reading

Getting ready for a baby in your home involves more than just baby-proofing. How to Include Your (Soon-to-be-Born) Baby at Christmas

There are lots of fun ways to include your soon-to-be born baby at Christmas. Who cares if they don’t know what is going on? For the mother-to-be, this “first” Christmas is just as special as all the Christmases to come. Christmas can almost begin to feel like a baby shower for a pregnant woman. Family members may have gifts for the new baby, such as clothes or toys, and will enjoy watching the new mother open them “for the baby.” Hanging a stocking for the expected baby is a cute way to give small gifts like teething rings, pacifiers or … Continue reading

The Effect Having a Baby Has on a Marriage

Many married couples feel that the next step in their relationship should be a baby. Not long after a couple marries, the public starts questioning about when they will be having children. The couple then feels like they are supposed to be parents. While being a parent is a wonderful experience it is not for everyone. There are moments in a couple’s marriage that a baby is not the right fit. A few articles ago, Courtney wrote about why she did not have children. I truly feel that it takes a lot of strength and courage for a woman to … Continue reading

Tommy’s New Sister – Gerda Marie Scheidl

Is there a new little one on the way to your house? Do you know someone who has just had a baby? If that baby has older siblings, this might be a great gift to help deal with sibling rivalry. Tommy has a wonderful mother and father, and a great dog named Muffin. But one day, a new baby came to live with them. Her name was Wendy, and she stayed for a really long time! That was confusing. He didn’t understand why she was bald, either. And he really didn’t want to help take care of her. Tommy had … Continue reading

Baby Picture Review & Game

We are having a ton of fun with our new bundle of joy. She was born on Memorial Day and we three are learning together what it means to now be a foursome. One of the first things we have done with our three year-old-daughter is to turn the freshly minted baby photos into a fun game of guess-who. She has always loved looking through photos of her family members as infants and little kids about her age, trying to find the similarities between their faces and hers. The most enjoyable thing about this has been putting her photos side … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: The best 8lbs I’ve ever gained

My new baby girl was born on Memorial Day. She greeted us at 1:08 am and weighed a healthy 8 lbs, 5 ounces. The routine on the home front has been as normal as something brand new can possibly be. I have been cooking well-rounded, full meals as I expected I would during my week off from work. As a result, my little family has been on a culinary tour of the globe over the last three days. On Thursday we enjoyed a taste of Mexico as I served up free-range chicken fajitas, yellow rice and tortilla chips. On Friday … Continue reading

Promoting a Positive Sibling Adjustment

My last blogs talked about the difficulties siblings may experience in an adoption and the positives of having siblings in adoptive families. In our experience, my three-year-old was very loving toward his one-year-old sister initially. He would often sigh and comment, “Wow, babies sure cry a lot” (we’d prepared him for this), but generally seemed okay. A few months later, however, he did have a couple of times yelling “send that baby back to Korea!” This was especially hard for us to hear before the adoption was finalized. Afterwards it didn’t bother us so much. I believe one of the … Continue reading

Breaking out the Baby books

Wow, we accumulated A LOT of baby books during our little girl’s infancy. There must have been hundreds of board books, cereal box freebies, and classic titles like Beatrix Potter and Winnie the Pooh packed away into the nursery room closet. Organizing these editions was one of the bigger, yet more pleasant, jobs that needed to be completed before baby number two’s birthday. Naturally, our three year old wanted in on the fun and during that shared experience I saw something amazingly cute and charming. Our little “big-girl”, upon seeing all these slightly-familiar-yet-new-again books, had an overwhelming desire to return … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Sympathy Belly

My second child should be arriving any minute now. Friday was probably the last doctor’s appointment before the big day. In fact, we were fairly certain the contractions would intensify shortly after the 3:30pm visit. They did, but my laid back daughter is apparently not ready to met us just yet, as my wife’s contractions never progressed enough to warrant a trip to the maternity ward. My first child has been with Grandma and Grandpa for the last three days, and, in her absence, my wife and I have been eating like college students – cheesesteaks, French fries, breaded chicken … Continue reading
