Woody Harrelson Sees Zombies

I have always like Woody Harrelson, from his television career on “Cheers” to his movie career with such films as “White Men Can’t Jump” and “No Country for Old Men.” But, I realize that in real life, Harrelson is a bit…different. This past Wednesday, Harrelson had an altercation with a photographer at the La Guardia airport in New York. The TMZ photographer was taking a video of Harrelson and his daughter as they went down an escalator to leave the terminal. The first video ends with Harrelson reaching for the camera. Fortunately for the photographer, who remains unidentified, he had … Continue reading

Long Island, NY Getting Ready to Ban BPA

A county in Long Island, New York may just be the first to ban baby bottles and sippy cups that contain the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA has been shown in many studies to have adverse affects on the developmental growth of babies. BPA can leak from sippy cups and baby bottles into food and drink. Suffolk County legislature approved the ban unanimously, now it is up to Steve Levy, the County Executive to sign it into law. This would make Suffolk County the very first in the nation to actually ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. Other state … Continue reading

R.I.P. Rocky Mountain News

It seems as if the invention of the Internet is killing traditional print newspapers. For years now, I have been reading that subscriptions were down and that papers were in the red. Now, another “victim” has bitten the dust – Denver’s Rocky Mountain News. After almost 150 years in the business, the Rocky Mountain News sent out its last issue on Friday. What did the final headline read? It said “Goodbye, Colorado.” The articles went on to say “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to you today. Our time chronicling the life of Denver and Colorado, the … Continue reading

Fun with Flowers

Spring isn’t exactly close to springing where I live. In fact, we’re currently under a winter storm watch. Meteorologists say up to 10 inches of snow is headed our way in the next 24 hours. Needless to say, I miss Hawaii more than ever–the warm sun, the beach, and most of all… the amazing flowers. Several U.S. cities help residents deal with the winter blues by hosting spectacular flower shows. Unfortunately, I don’t live near any of them, but you might. If you are looking to take a break from the bitter cold, ice and snow, consider checking out one … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Family Fun Indoors and Out

For some people Thanksgiving is one of the few chances they get to visit with out-of-town relatives. If you are reuniting with your favorite cousin, a nomadic uncle or just welcoming home your college-coed son this Thanksgiving, consider doing more than just sitting around the house gorging on goodies. The long holiday weekend is the official kick-off to a number of seasonal activities, including ice-skating. Several outdoor rinks open to the public on Thanksgiving. Scary Places: The Amityville Horror House

If you don’t know the history behind the Amityville horror movies, let me fill you in. George and Kathleen Lutz bought the house in 1975. But, after only 28 days there, the family (including their children) fled in horror. Or, did they? (This image has been (or is hereby) released into the public domain by its author, Seulatr at the wikipedia project.) George and Kathleen claimed that a lot of really weird things went on in those 28 days. George claimed he woke up every morning at 3:15 a.m. The house was filled with flies, even though it was winter … Continue reading

Justice of the Peace Ceremonies: Manhattan Style

Today Jade sent me a link to a New York Times article that reminded me of one of the wedding scenes in Sex and the City: The Movie. (The one where Carrie and Big finally make it official.) The article was “Drab Setting, but Joyous Work: Making 2 Into 1” written by Fernanda Santos. It was about the Manhattan Marriage Bureau (MMB.). Apparently it’s quite the humble, but popular place, to get hitched in New York. And it’s about to get a makeover. Why the New Look After 92 Years? There are two reasons the MMB is slated for a … Continue reading

Hands-On Fall Fun for Families

While the new fall season beckons families outdoors to participate in kid-friendly activities sometimes it’s also nice to have a place to go where your kids can blow off steam when Mother Nature throws you a curve ball. If you live in a city with a children’s museum then you know how valuable these structures can be. Some parents call these havens for hands-on fun sanity savers and if you have kids who have been cooped up for days because of inclement weather then you would probably agree with that description. These days children’s museums are bigger and better than … Continue reading
