Disney Jr. – Live on Stage!

It’s certainly a time of change at Disney, and last week the latest took place: the switch from Playhouse Disney to Disney Jr. Thanks to Michele for pointing it out to me; I wasn’t sure if Disney Jr. was indeed the replacement for Playhouse Disney, or just an additional feature. Despite discussing it, we’re not really sure of the motivation for the name change. The most likely candidate is that Disney’s trying to compete with Nick Jr., but having names so similar seems like it will just cause more confusion than competition. I also thought that perhaps execs thought kids … Continue reading

Baby Nick Jr. Curious Buddies: Helping at Home

The Curious Buddies are part of Baby Nick Jr., which is of course part of Nickelodeon, the children’s television network. There is a series of videos with these cute little puppets that are geared toward infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. “Helping at Home” is one of the videos in the Curious Buddies series, and it continues the Curious Buddies’ tradition of teaching your child about life. My daughter only had “Curious Buddies: Let’s Make Music” on DVD, and she apparently saw it in the store when we were walking through the DVD section. I was looking at a different children’s video … Continue reading

The Influence of Older Siblings on Preschoolers

A preschooler is blessed to have older siblings. A big sister is great for reading bedtime stories, doing hair and laughing. A big brother will play all day outside, let you win, and doesn’t mind if you get dirty. A sweet relationship develops between older and younger siblings. There are trying times, challenges, and disagreements but in the end a bond is formed that cannot be broken. Most big brothers and sisters have no intention of being a poor influence on their younger siblings. Many times what is acceptable and age appropriate for an older sibling is not acceptable or … Continue reading

Politicians That Have Changed Their Names

What’s in a name? Actually, quite a lot of information can be gleaned from a person’s name. A name can help connect relationships between different generations of a family. A surname could give clues about a person’s heritage. When a politician changes his name, even slightly, it could alter the way he is perceived by potential voters. Rick Perry is the current Governor of Texas. He is a Republican. He has been in the news lately because of his view that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are all “a Ponzi scheme”. His birth name is James Richard Perry. He shares … Continue reading

Celebrities and Commencement Season

It’s graduation time, and there’s no better way to draw attention to your school’s commencement ceremony than to invite a big name celebrity to address students. This year is no different with Oprah heading to Duke University to inspire the graduating class of 2009 to never give up on their dreams. Easy for her to say. In addition, President Barack Obama made it through his commencement address to students at The University of Notre Dame, despite protestors who disagree with his stance on abortion. Meanwhile, in New England, basketball star, Larry Bird and legendary movie director Steven Spielberg were the … Continue reading

Musicians To The Rescue

It’s considered one of the country’s premier musical events, but many of the hottest acts performing at this year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival weren’t wielding microphones and trumpets; rather they were grabbing paintbrushes and swinging hammers in a part of the city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Last night on the news I watched one of my girlhood crushes, Harry Connick Jr., trimming a bedroom window with fresh paint. Meanwhile, another shot showed R&B heartthrob John Legend washing clothes as part of a free mobile laundry service for families still living in federally issued trailers in hard-hit St. … Continue reading

Free Magazines

One of my very favorite deals is getting free magazines. Ever since I was little and I had my very first magazine subscription (I think it was Dynomite), I’ve looked forward to getting a glossy new magazine in the mail. You would be surprised at how many magazines out there can be had for free. At one time or another, I’ve gotten, for free, the following mainstream magazines such as: Family Fun, Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day, Saveur (gourmet food), Better Homes and Gardens, Memory Makers (scrapbooking), Budget Living, Marie Claire, Disney and more. I’ve also gotten some more obscure titles … Continue reading
