Are Memories and Nostalgia Bogging You Down?

I have some incredible memories of my kids’ growing up, and I also have some unpleasant memories of a dissolving marriage and divorce, not to mention other little hard times that make up my past. As parents, we can find ourselves reminiscing, wishing, and getting nostalgic on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes they are nothing more than brief, sweet memories, but other times, our memories can become so strong and constant that they keep us from being able to live in the moment. What can you do with all those memories and what do they mean? I do believe that … Continue reading

How Long Do I Keep the Sippy Cups?

Alright, here is my confession for the day–I STILL have a dozen sippy cups tucked up in my kitchen cupboard. I have not been able to bring myself to throw them out even though my three children are all in the later years of high school and in less than a year, the eldest will be marching off to college. Secondhand Lions (2003)

“Secondhand Lions” is a delightful movie starring Haley Joel Osment as a young boy being raised by an irresponsible mother (Kyra Sedgwick). When his mother comes up with yet another get-ahead idea, this time a court reporting school in Ft. Worth, Walter is taken to live with two great-uncles he’s never met. Later, when he discovers that his mother never did enroll in that school, Walter feels abandoned and betrayed, but his uncles step in to take up the slack, in their own unique ways. Garth and Hub are unusual men, to say the least. They’re both getting on in … Continue reading

Some we saved and some got boxed to give away. He’s thirteen so he doesn’t need his talking Arthur, his stuffed Pooh Bears or many other toys. Boxing up the toys made me sad, and made me miss the little boy who carried that Pooh bear everywhere. A week later my sister-in-law forwarded an email to me called “If You Were a Little Girl in the 70’s”. It showed all kinds … Continue reading
