New Year’s Eve Fun For Kids

New Year’s Eve is known for its raucous parties filled with libations and debauchery. That’s great for grown-ups, but if you have young kids at home you might be looking for G-rated fun. The following games are ideal for a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve bash: RING TOSS Place a large plastic tablecloth on the floor and cover it with candy and small items you can get at the Dollar Store, such as erasers, pencils, plastic animals, crayons, etc. Have the children stand a couple feet away from the tablecloth (distance should depend on their age). Hand each child three rings … Continue reading

Outdoor Games and Track Day

Today was the annual Track Day at our elementary school. I will admit to grumbling just a little bit before I went. With only ten days left of school, I didn’t feel like giving up my last free Thursday. And I’ve been to so many track days over the years, they’ve lost a little charm. Today was my eleventh track day as a parent. I’m so glad I went today though. My children were glad to see me, I got some great pictures, and got to visit with some other parents. Mainly though, this was the most creative track day … Continue reading

Games to Play at a Pooh Bear Party

Here are some games to play at your Pooh Bear Party! For a fun game, that is harder than it sounds, try to throw “bees” into a honey pot. The bees can be any decent sized candy. We used miniature Hersey candy bars. To make the candy look more like bees, draw black stripes on yellow tissue paper, then wrap a small pieces of the tissue paper around the candy and secure it with a piece of clear tape. To play the game, try to throw the “bees” into the pot. The honey pot can be a punch bowl, or … Continue reading

My Mind Reading ESP Trick

I’m going to share with you my ESP mind-reading trick. A friend of mine taught me this years ago. It works great at Halloween parties. It even manages to confound adults! For this to work, you need be sitting a little bit away from the group so that no one can see over your shoulder. You ask for a volunteer to tell you his or her three favorite TV shows, or three favorite books, or three favorite anything. Let’s say the first TV show the volunteer says is “Arthur”. You write down “Arthur” on a small strip of paper. You … Continue reading

Halloween Relays for Parties

Here are two fun relay races for Halloween parties. I’ve played both of these with many classes of elementary school children. They’d be fun for a family, too. Slime Relay is definitely an outdoor game. The slime is made of cornstarch, water, and a few drops of food green color. I would love to tint the slime a dark nasty green, but I don’t want to stain anyone’s clothes, either. To make the slime combine one cup of cornstarch to one half cup of water, and add a few drops of food color. The cornstarch slime should feel solid when … Continue reading

Egg and Spoon Race – Game Review

The Egg and Spoon Race Game from International Playthings is such fun. The game retails for around seven or eight dollars. It’s recommended for ages three and up. It comes with four different colored plastic spoons and eggs, so four people or relay teams can play at once. The cutest part of the game is the tiny white beanbag with a yellow circle on it. It looks like an egg yolk. I first saw this game in a dog training class. We had to do the egg and spoon race with the dog’s leash wrapped around our wrist. They didn’t … Continue reading

Planning a Valentine’s Party for School

Today I am busy planning games for the Valentine’s Day party for my twins’ third grade class. Their winter holiday party got canceled due to a blizzard. So I want the Valentine’s party to be extra special. I’m trying to think up fresh ideas or at least fun slants on old ideas. I think we might do the old guess how many valentine heart candies are in the jar game. But since they are learning multiplication now, I think I’ll throw a multiplying slant to it. How many candies would there be if there were three jars with just as … Continue reading

Birthday Party Fun

When it comes to birthday parties, we strive for ways to keep kids entertained for a few hours, often using tried and true methods and games. How about adding some new ideas to your repertoire? Here’s a simple, yet fun idea. Add boxes of crayons to the treat bags you make up so each child will have his or her own crayons. Purchase two solid colored, paper tablecloths, preferably white or another light color. Spread one tablecloth out on the table and let the kids color the entire thing, making designs, leaving notes, and signing their names. Cut the second … Continue reading

Loser Games

Playing loser games is a fun twist on your kids’ favorite board games. Loser Games can also bring new life to games that have sat on the shelf because your kids have outgrown them or simply grown tired of them. The point to loser games is just like it sounds. If you lose, you win! My kids started playing Loser Games when my son was very small and my daughter kept beating him at simple games. He was getting frustrated, and didn’t want to play anymore, and so my daughter told him that if he lost the next game, he … Continue reading
