Appreciating Pet Photographers

I got the brilliant idea of a “family portrait” the other day — Moose, Lally, and I all in the same picture for once. (It’s rare that I can get that to happen.) Moose is the easy one. He’s pretty happy to lay there and pose for pictures without a problem for quite some time. All it takes is a little petting and you’ve got a Moose in place! I’m probably the second-easiest one out of the family trio. I’m not usually fond of pictures of myself, but I’m willing to pose and try not to blink. Lally is the … Continue reading

Pet Bereavement Photography

The other day my friend Karen and I had a chance to catch up. I asked her about recent jobs she and Michael have done (they’re pet photographers) and she shocked me by telling me they’d gone with another friend who was having her dog put to sleep to photograph that. Now, they were very close friends with this person and I can understand going for support, but to catch the moment on film? That really shook me up. I admitted as much. “I know it sounds a little weird, but Donna got the idea because they’ve done some infant … Continue reading

Pet Portraits by Michael: Chatting About Pet Photography

In Meet the Josephs I introduced you to some very dear friends of our entire family: Michael, Karen, and Tucker Joseph. (I should have used the above picture for that piece, but I didn’t have it yet. Oh well. Now you can see what the Josephs, not just Tucker, look like!) I thought it’d be fun to interview them about their business, and thankfully their schedule wasn’t as swamped as it usually is so they had a little time to humor me… Courtney Mroch: Say someone’s interested in getting a Pet Portrait by Michael. Describe how a shoot goes, what … Continue reading

Meet the Josephs

Tucker Joseph with his Aunt Court and Uncle Wayne Labor Day Weekend 2006 I’d like to introduce you to some very dear friends of mine, the Josephs: Michael, Karen and Tucker, the 80 pound wonder dog. (a.k.a. Murphy’s best friend.) When we lived in Jacksonville, the Josephs lived at the top of our block. They moved into their house right around the same time we moved into ours. I remember thinking as I’d see Karen walk Tucker up and down our street, “My golly, that’s a big dog for that lady. I hope she can handle him.” Well, of course … Continue reading

Say “Cheese!” What to Do With That Perfect Pet Photo

Have you ever had this happen to you: You catch your dog (or cat or whatever kind of pet you might have) doing something too cute or funny or bizarre, so you grab your camera, snap a shot, and to your delight actually capture the moment perfectly on film? I know, it’s rare. (Well, at least for me it is.) I have yet to actually know such a triumph. However, I have had a few moments where I’ve managed to get a pretty cute or tender moment on film. So I do what any good parent does with such treasures: … Continue reading

Part Time Jobs for Pet Lovers

Are you looking to turn your love of pets into some extra income? Here are some business ideas that can work for you on a part-time basis… and maybe develop into a full-time career! Pooper-Scooper Service It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Starting up a pooper-scooper business is pretty easy — if you have some garbage bags, a shovel, and some gloves, you’re just about ready to go. Nose plugs wouldn’t hurt, either. There are lots of people out there who are willing to pay $30-$60 a month for a weekly yard clean-up. That doesn’t sound like … Continue reading

More Pet Photography

Today, we’ll continue to explore some more photographers that specialize in portraits of pets. In my previous post, I covered several good ones. Here are some more: Brian Ratty has some good information for photographing pets on this site. There are tips on backgrounds, lighting, shutter speeds, …etc. NYPetShots is the site of another professional pet photographer, Steven Fromewick. The picture of him and his German Shephard is great. It brings back memories of my childhood Alaskan Malamute, Nanook. But that is a story for another day. The photography site of fine art photographerRobyn Kessler has some awesome photos of … Continue reading

Pet Photographers

I was recently surfing the web for some new ideas to write about, and I came across a whole listing of pet photographers. I love to photograph my pets and those of other people, and so I thought I would pass along some information on photographers that specialize in pet photography. I’ll start with the most famous pet photographer I know (of), William Wegman. Wegman uses large format polaroid cameras to take pictures of his wonderful Weimeraners. At his siteyou will find some funny videos, photos and assorted other stuff. Check it out. He has a really warped sense of … Continue reading
