“Storage Wars” Mark Balelo Dies

My family loves “Storage Wars,” especially my eight-year-old son.  It is not uncommon to hear him running around my house yelling “Yuuup” like Dave Hester. I had to explain how Dave Hester, who is now suing A&E, isn’t going to be on the show anymore.  Hester is claiming that the whole show, based on people purchasing storage units that have been abandoned, is a sham and A&E plants valuable items in the units. Now, the show has suffered another tragedy that hopefully my son won’t notice.  Mark Balelo was a buyer that the show introduced in season 2.  A native … Continue reading

Dave Hester’s Out on ‘Storage Wars’

My 8-year-old loves “Storage Wars,” the A&E reality show that follows around people who bid on storage units being auctioned off for lack of payment by the owners.  He wears his fake teeth and calls himself Barry (after Barry Weiss, one of the regulars on the show who wore fake teeth in one episode to “disguise” himself).  He also runs around the room yelling “Yuuup,” which is what Dave Hester, another show regular, says when he bids on the storage units. At least Hester used to be a regular.  My son will probably be devastated because Hester has been let … Continue reading

Reality Star Jade Goody is Dying

British reality star Jade Goody has shown the country her personality through reality shows, now she is choosing to die just as openly. Twenty seven year old Goody appeared on the British version of “Big Brother” in 2002. She became well known, but not always for good reasons. The press hounded her for her lack of knowledge of British geography and criticized her for running around the Big Brother house naked and drunk. However, she became popular with the public. (This image, by Keira76, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 License.) She went on to star in … Continue reading

Steven Segal Does Reality and Food Network Serves Up Two New Shows

Do you remember action hero Steven Segal? Well, he’s back and this time, he is wielding a badge. That’s right, Segal will star as a New Orleans crime fighter in his new reality show titled “Steven Segal: Lawman,” which is set to premiere on A&E in late 2009. Segal is deputized by the Jefferson Parish County Sheriff’s Department and he hopes to clean up the Big Easy, which has been left crime riddled since Hurricane Katrina. The show will also follow Segal as he tries to help rebuild the community. Segal said he is doing the show, in part, to … Continue reading

Reality Winners Crowned and A&E Reality Pilot Bites the Dust

If you were watching television last night, you might have noticed that both “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Last Comic Standing” crowned new champions in a reality show double-header. First up was “So You Think You Can Dance.” This year, there were two girls and two guys as the four finalists, but there was one interesting twist – neither guy was classically trained. Both Joshua and Twitch are street hip-hop dancers who just truly stepped up to the plate to perform dances like Broadway and the Russian trepak. For the girls, it was Courtney that was eliminated first. … Continue reading

American Idol News: The Final Two and Taylor Hits Broadway

If you watched “American Idol” this week, you know that next week’s season 7 winner will be named David. It just remains to be seen if his last name will be Cook or Archuleta. The two Davids squeezed out the last remaining female contestant, Syesha Mercado, this week. The musical styles of the two Davids are quite different. Although Archuleta is only 17 years old, to me, he has a sort of 70s easy listening feel to his music. On the other hand, Cook is pure rocker, through and through. Regardless of which one wins, I am sure we will … Continue reading

Reality TV Updates: April 28, 2008

Big week for reality television as American Idol narrows them down, Big Brother finishes up, and a new show start. First up, American Idol whittled the contestants down to five as Irish beauty Carly Smithson was eliminated this week. There had been a bit of controversy over Carly as she had previously had a recording contract but managed to sell less than 500 copies and was dropped. She had good weeks and bad week on Idol this year, but this week was her final as she was the bottom vote getter over Syesha (who had an amazing performance – how … Continue reading

Dancing with the Stars

I’ll freely admit it—I’m a “Dancing with the Stars” fanatic, too. It’s allowable to have more than one television love, isn’t it? “Dancing with the Stars” has a fun premise. It takes world class ballroom dancers and teams them up with celebrities, who may or may not have any dancing in their backgrounds at all. The professionals choreograph the numbers and teach them to the celebrities, who then perform them for three judges—Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli, professionals in the business. The judges’ scores only count for half of the contestants’ total score—the viewers at home can … Continue reading

American Idol

“American Idol” fever has swept the nation and I got swept right along with it. From the moment it hit the American airwaves seven seasons ago, it’s been the talk of the break room, the water cooler, and the hair salon. So, just what is all the hype about? We start by seeing the auditions. The three judges—Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson—travel to different cities across the nation and audition local talent. These hopefuls first pass by preliminary judges who either wave them through or send them on their way. They are then sent one at a time … Continue reading

What Not to Wear

“What Not to Wear” is one of my favorite television shows. I’m not sure what it is I like so much – maybe the idea of having a ton of money to spend on clothes, or the fun banter between the hosts. Whatever it is, I try hard not to miss the new episodes that air every Friday night on TLC. Older episodes air every afternoon, but I tend to miss those. The show is hosted by Clinton Kelly and Stacy London, two stylists from New York. Each week, they surprise a fashion victim that has been nominated by loving, … Continue reading
