Spring Exploration in the Great Outdoors

April showers bring May flowers… and hopefully some warmer temperatures so you and your family can enjoy inexpensive outdoor explorations. Old Man Winter refuses to exit gracefully this year.  Many parts of the country are still buried under snow and ice, including my neck of the woods.  However, in some states spring is well underway and with the change of seasons comes a host of affordable travel opportunities that allow you to conquer cabin fever without going broke: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park:  California’s largest state park is located roughly two hours northeast of San Diego.  It boasts more than 110 … Continue reading

Get More Bang for Your Vacation Buck

Old Man Winter is unleashing a cruel smackdown on the Upper Midwest. If daytime high temperatures in the single digits don’t make you want to book a tropical escape, then northern Wisconsin may be the perfect place for you to call home. For the rest of the rest of us, the thought of luxuriating in a climate that doesn’t call for 17 layers of clothes is much more appealing. Fortunately, there are warm weather vacation destinations that don’t require going into debt to visit.  For example, sunny San Diego, California, is providing visitors with multiple opportunities to get more bang … Continue reading

San Diego Zoo Renovates Polar Bear Exhibit to Teach About Global Warming

The San Diego Zoo has an incredible polar bear exhibit, but it has just been renovated with education in mind. The climate changes have been hard on polar bears in the wild. Their natural habitats are dwindling and their food supplies are disappearing. The world famous San Diego Zoo’s Polar Bear Plunge exhibit hopes to educate visitors about the effect of global warming. There are three bears at the Polar Bear Plunge exhibit – 15-year-old Chinook and her nine-year-old brother Kalluk and sister Tatqiq. The $1 million renovation features “the world’s first moveable experience wall.” This wall will be removed … Continue reading

Who is Adam Lambert?

He is one of the most exciting “American Idol” contestants to grace the stage in years, but you may not know too much about Adam Lambert, one of the finalists that will be vying for the title next week. Actually, there isn’t a lot known about Lambert’s pre-Idol life. Yet, if he looks abnormally comfortable on the big stage compared to some of the other contestants, there is a reason. Not only is the 27 year old one of the oldest competitors this season (third place finisher Danny Gokey is 29 and tenth place finisher Michael Sarver is 28), but … Continue reading

Top Gun Landmark Burns

In my opinion, the film Top Gun was the one that boosted Tom Cruise to superstar status, a place he hasn’t left despite his strange Scientology ramblings and couch jumping ways. The film, which has grossed over $353 million both nationally and internationally, has become a huge part of pop culture. The movie received four Oscar nominations, although it only won one (for Best Music, Original Song). There are plenty of pop culture references to Top Gun. There is a FedEx ad in which a carpet warehouse guide radios a co-worker when he sees a flying carpet getting away – … Continue reading
