My Own Schedule

There is a terrifying thing happening recently concerning my schedule: I’m in charge of it. While this has to some extent been a dream for a long time it comes with its own magnificent set of problems. The biggest problem is keeping whatever schedule I set for myself. In some ways this has always been a problem (even before I was taking care of my son during the day) but in other ways having a great deal of time on my hands with so many things to do I get a little bit lost in the middle of it all. … Continue reading

Baby: To Schedule, Or Not To Schedule?

My husband and I never considered putting our baby on a schedule while I was pregnant, and we didn’t think about it after she was born. When we thought she was hungry, I nursed her, and when she seemed tired, we let her sleep. I thought that was what most parents did, but as we talked to more and more new parents, we realized it’s very common for parents to get their babies on a regular schedule almost immediately. I admit that there were some days when I wondered if I was hurting our daughter by having a “go-with-the-flow” attitude. … Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a Relaxed Homeschooler with Teens

Some time back, I am my fellow homeschool bloggers all discussed what a day in the life of homeschooling looked like from our perspective. I wrote A Day in the Life of a Relaxed Homeschooler part 1 Part 2 , and Part 3 Valorie Delp Wrote A Day in the Life of a Highly Regulated Relaxed Homeschooler part 1 and part 2 Karen Edminsten gave a peek into her homeschooling life with More Charlotte Mason: An atmosphere, a discipline, a life. I highly recommend you read these posts. It has been several years since I wrote my “Day In the … Continue reading

Summer Tip–Stick to a Schedule (within Reason)

For a busy single parent, summer time can be chaotic. With the kids out of school and vacations and events, there is often much more to do than we can reasonably manage. Although summer time may be known for its freewheeling reputation, for a single parent, having a schedule and sticking to a plan for the days of the summer can be the best approach. Of course, we need flexibility—and we need down time and unscheduled leisure too, but as a single parent, we also need enough structure to make sure that the kids are cared for and entertained, work … Continue reading

Holiday Planning for Single Parent Families

I know that the holidays can be a stressful, confusing time for all families—but single parent families have some extra details and stressors thrown in there. We may have to coordinate more events and help our children maneuver between two (or more families) and we may have the added constraints of a single parent’s budget and schedule. As much as I would rather not, I’ve learned that I really need to get started early. Things will still tend to “seem” like they come together at the last minute—but if I get the ball rolling and start to map out schedules … Continue reading

Changes: Sleep Schedule

Before I had my son, I was a complete night owl. I would stay up till four or five in the morning, and the hours between midnight and when I went to sleep were my peak hours. Those hours were the ones that I worked the best, the ones where I was most aware, the ones that I got the most done. When I had my son, I got sleep whenever I possibly could, just like any woman who has just had a baby. For the first two year, Jonathan could and would sleep anywhere at any time. Shortly after … Continue reading

Single Parent Travels: Schedule Sleep

Sleep is another thing I had to schedule. As I said in Single Parent Travels: Set Expectations I can tell how he will behave by looking at three things, one of them being sleep. I wanted to make sure that while we were there he got enough sleep to help curb negative behavior as much as possible. When we are at home, he doesn’t have a set bedtime. He also has a couple sleeping problems. He won’t sleep if I am not there. I am sure this has to do with anxiety, and Tiffany being hit has somewhat reinforced those … Continue reading

Single Parent Travels: Schedule Playtime

Not only did I have to schedule meals for him, I also had to schedule play and energy use time. Not quiet play time, as we were in the hospital and he was getting enough of that, but outside run around and be crazy time. When we are at home and everyone is awake, he is allowed to play inside and get loud to a point. When he has reached the point of being too loud, he can go outside and play in the yard, jump on the trampoline, go to the park with me, ride his bike, roller blade, … Continue reading
