Three Families in an Undesirable School District

Faced with an undesirable school district and a tight budget? Here is how three different families adapted. Some years ago, we shared a town and school district with the in-laws. We both had young children and were facing the prospect of placing them in a not-so-great school district. While the town was lovely, the fact was that the school district was one of the worst in the state, due to some poor management, overcrowding, and a strange bussing policy that retained the option of pulling our elementary students to distant schools in areas with high crime rates. In addition to … Continue reading

Yummy Mushrooms

I’m a big fan of mushrooms and try to forget the fact they really are fungi and think of them as vegetables. Unlike the Romans who believed mushrooms were a gift from God only to be used on special occasions, I use mushrooms a lot. When they are cheap I buy them in large quantities. I tend to put them in just about every casserole or crock pot meal I make as well as using them in pies, enchiladas, salads, quiche, and just about anything else I’m making or simply on their own. A trick my son-in-law taught me is … Continue reading

More Rhubarb Recipes

I just got back from yet another conference (this was the last one–I promise) to discover my husband had bought more rhubarb. It was on sale, and he knows I like it. Consequently, I have been ‘forced’, (the kind of ‘forced’ you are when you really, really want to do something but don’t want to seem too eager), to find more rhubarb recipes. Rhubarb, commonly also referred to as the ‘pie plant’ because it is so frequently used in pies, counts as a vegetable so if you have trouble getting your ‘5 a day’ in–you can always eat rhubarb pie. … Continue reading

Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie

I love pumpkin pie but for some reason, I never think to make it except at Thanksgiving. Now that I have found a recipe that includes ice cream, I will definitely make pumpkin pie more often! For this recipe, you will need ginger snaps, margarine, pecans or walnuts, orange peel, canned pumpkin, packed brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice (or ground cinnamon can be used as a substitute), whipped cream, and a pint of ice cream. For the ice cream, you can use vanilla but you can also change the taste of the pie by adding something different like butter pecan … Continue reading

Educational Neglect: What you Should Know

Some people who home school barely hear from their school districts and merrily go about their educational path until they stop home schooling. But for others, dealing with the board of education is a nightmare. Although home schooling your child is your right, protected by the 14th amendment, the board of education does not necessarily see it this way. Now let me say that for every person who is harassed by social services or the board of education, there are about 10 more who are not. However, for those families who have had problems with these agencies, the experience is … Continue reading
