Toddler Fun Foods

It can be difficult to get toddlers to eat. Most are finicky eaters and do not like to try new foods. Several toddlers only want their favorite foods and complain about trying different foods. Making “fun foods” can help convince your toddlers to try new and healthy foods and snacks. Let’s look at some “fun food” ideas: Fun Shaped Sandwiches Take any peanut butter and jelly sandwich and cut it with a cookie cutter for an instant favorite. Use cookie cutters for ham and cheese sandwiches, tuna salad sandwiches or any kind of sandwich that your child eats. If it … Continue reading

Snack Habits in My Pack

It seems that there are two types of dog: the dog who will eat anything in front of him, whenever it is available (like my dog Moose) and the dog who only eats when she’s hungry (like my dog Lally). When it comes to snacks, Moose and Lally are also very different. Moose will try anything once. Twice. Seventeen times. Lally is a much pickier eater. She only likes certain things and will disdain anything that isn’t on her list. Her likes include chicken jerky, chicken or beef flavored chewy treats, and the occasional rawhide (but only when she’s in … Continue reading

Fish Bait Kids Snack

This is a really fun snack for a summer party, a class snack or a birthday party. Personally, I will be using this recipe for my son’s upcoming birthday party in two weeks. He is having a pirate theme for his party. I’m going to triple the batch (at least) and serve it in a wooden treasure chest that I found at the craft store. This recipe is so simple to make, and yet, I am sure that it will make a big impact with the kids. You could also try it for any outdoor gathering or picnic. If you … Continue reading

Cheap Snacks

Let’s face it, you have to have snacks now and then. Every frugal shopping expert will tell you to avoid the snack aisle when grocery shopping, because you’ll end up spending too much money on junk food instead of on good food. The empty calories aren’t great either, but hey, we all need to crunch once in a while. Sure, you can crunch on fresh veggies and other healthy stuff, but who doesn’t like a good crispy, salty chip, puff, or pretzel occasionally? This is a good time of year to give in to the urge. Snacks are usually on … Continue reading

Valentine Classroom Cupcakes

If you signed up to bring treats to your child’s classroom on Valentine’s Day, cupcakes are a sure hit. There is no need to spend too much time on complicated decorations with these easy ideas. First, if you bake the cupcakes yourself, use a cake mix. You might be tempted to bake something from scratch, but if you’ve ever seen a classroom full of fourth-graders wolfing down cupcakes, you can see that they might miss the subtleties of Grandma Ruby’s lemon curd confections. It’s the frosting and decorations that count. If you buy cupcakes from the store, you can still … Continue reading

Popcorn Treats

We usually have an early dinner on Sunday, and so come Sunday evening, everyone starts nosing around the kitchen. I like to make a special treat that is fun and filling. Popcorn fits the bill, because it’s easy and there are many tasty variations you can try. Caramel Corn This recipe is our family favorite. About 15 cups popped popcorn 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
