The Measure of Success

I was talking to a dear friend of mine late last night. We both were expressing our frustration with the men, or lack thereof, in our lives. We both have had such a strong desire to find a good man to share our lives with and have tried our best to live worthy of such a man; a man who would love and support us, who would be a good father and husband. I realized before long that we had both equated our success in life to whether or not we would ever marry. We both had such an intense … Continue reading

Don’t Put All of Your Eggs in One Basket

One thing that it is important to keep in mind when you start your own, home – based business is that timeless phrase, “don’t put all of your eggs in one basket”. When you work outside of the home, chances are that someone else is responsible for providing a job for you to do. When you have your own business, you are responsible for making sure that you have enough work to keep yourself busy (and fed, and clothed). The best way for a home – based professional to ensure that he or she always has enough work is to … Continue reading

Multiple Teachers

This semester I’m teaching a course with two other instructors. It is a unique and interesting course blending all of the fine arts into a collection of humanities credits through multiple instructors. I just recently taught during our first class period. As with most first days it was spent on getting to know one another, getting familiar with the syllabus, and laying out the groundrules for the semester. Pretty standard stuff. One of the difficult things for me, as an instructor, was sharing the floor with other people. My teaching style is one based on my own personality creating a … Continue reading

How do You and Your Spouse Rate?

Why men want sex and women need love is the title of a new book out. I admit I haven’t read the book but I couldn’t help wondering if that was a gross over simplification. The book is written by a successful Australian couple. On the site there is an about us link. But about as us tells you nothing about them except what they have achieved in the publishing business and how many best selling books they have and how successful they are in business. It tells you nothing about how long they have been married or what their … Continue reading

Self Esteem- A Balanced View

Yesterday we looked at how important it is to build up and encourage our marriage partner. It is also important we have a realistic view of ourselves. Yes, Romans 12:3 says each of us should not‘think more highly of himself than he ought to think.’ Of course this verse applies to women as well. Every woman should not think more highly of herself than she ought to think ‘but to think so as to have sound judgment.’ That also means not doing the opposite and putting ourselves down and feeling inadequate or inferior. We all have a habit of comparing … Continue reading

Do You Prevent Your Own Success?

A friend of mine gave me a great book recently. In April, I was going to England for a week and I’m always desperate for good reading material on the plane. We’ve got an odd collection of books around here, but I love books that have buried wisdom in them. This book is called “How to Be Totally Miserable.” Our doubts are traitors, And make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt. – William Shakespeare Misery Loves Company Too often we sabotage our own success whether in life, in school or in our fitness choices. … Continue reading

Is it Successful or Lucrative, or Both?

Evaluation is a key component to running a successful business, no matter how small it might be. It is also the one component that many of us overlook. After all, we are often so busy trying to keep the money rolling in and meet the needs of the day, who has time to sit around and contemplate what is and what is not working? That contemplation, however, that figuring out whether we are actually being successful and making money, is important. Success can mean different things to different people. In fact, I would even go so far as to share … Continue reading

Success can be Scary

There is a reason so many people cite a fear of success as being one of the things that holds them back. For many people that unsure feeling of impending change can be a big deterrent–even if that change is for the better. When it comes to our home businesses, we might find that the fear of success is the scariest thing, and the biggest roadblock to our moving forward. Why is it that success can be so frightening to many of us? The truth is, we get comfortable where we are, we get used to things the way they … Continue reading

Money isn’t Everything

The thought that money is not everything may seem odd to mention in a blog that is all about money, but it is necessary to do so. In our focused rush to get ahead, it is important to take a second to stop and breathe. Money does NOT make the world go round. Often we imagine that those who make over $200,000 a year are happier than we are in our lives. Seriously, though, they most often are not. Jobs that pay those kinds of salaries are extremely demanding. Not only do they add stress, they take away from your … Continue reading

What Skills Do You Need to Succeed? And, Where Can You Get Them?

I think many of us are tempted to look at the skills we already have and think that is the end of the line. We evaluate our existing skills in terms of what we can bring to our home business and then assume that whatever is missing will stay missing. But, it can be beneficial to take a good look at what sort of skills are required for your business or industry—especially in order to be competitive and successful—and then figure out what is lacking and how you can develop those skills to be even more successful. Different jobs and … Continue reading
