PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities

Voting for PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2010 is still open. I read on Facebook that octogenarian Cloris Leachman, apparently not to be outdone by that minx Betty White, is currently one of the forerunners in the contest. Who will 2010’s winners join as sexy vegetarian celebrities? Newly single Shania Twain won in 2001, the first year the contest was held. Shania said she became vegetarian when she married her ex, Mutt Lange. At least she took something good away from the marriage. In 2002, PETA decided to have a sexiest male and female vegetarian celebrity. The male honors went … Continue reading

Non-Seafood Lenten Meals

What’s for dinner during Lent? Two words: Fish fry. Some families live and die by Fish Fry Fridays during Lent, but my clan is not one of them. Heck, my young daughter refuses to eat fish more than once a month, so weekly doses of seafood often result in hunger strikes (which, I suppose is not entirely inappropriate during Lent). If your family is tiring of the same ol’ Friday night fish stick dinner, then consider the following non-seafood Lenten recipes. Not only are they simple to make, they are also incredibly inexpensive: VEGETARIAN PIZZA POCKETS Ingredients: 12 Rhodes Texas … Continue reading

Going Green by Going Meatless

Let me start out by saying I am definitely a carnivore. I love meat, but I also love veggies and while I will never be truly vegetarian, as I get older, I recognize the benefits of going meatless every once in a while. Not only can going meatless occasionally be better for your healthy, it can also make an impact on the environment. Livestock, Environment, and Development (LEAD) recently issued a report (400+ pages!) with a few statistics you might find surprising: Almost two-thirds of the human related ammonia emissions are due to livestock. 9 percent of all human activity … Continue reading

Hearty Vegetarian Lasagna

This is not a dish you could easily whip up after working overtime at the office and had five hungry (an impatient) mouths to feed. It’s best made on a lazy Sunday or any other time when you have few interruptions. Despite the disclaimer I can tell you that the end result is well worth the effort. When I was first served this particular lasagna at a friend’s home in Hawaii I couldn’t believe it was vegetarian. There’s no mistaking that it lacks ground beef, but the dish was so hearty and the addition of the macadamia nuts gave it … Continue reading

Are You Ready for Raw?

Sting, Angela Bassett, Woody Harrelson, David Bowie, Lisa Bonet, Robin Williams, Donna Karan, Alicia Silverstone and Demi Moore are a just a few of the celebrities you may have heard of who are eating raw foods and proud of it. We’re hearing more and more about raw food being all the rage these days so I thought it was high time we took a look at what this diet/lifestyle really entails. The raw food diet is all about eating living foods that still have all their healthy enzymes intact. For obvious reasons, this is a vegetarian diet that relies solely … Continue reading

What Can The Mediterranean Diet Do For You?

We keep hearing about the Mediterranean Diet but nobody tell us exactly what it is. We keep hearing about what it can do for those of us with heart disease, diabetes and arthritis and yet, where are the instructions? We’re told the Mediterranean Diet leads to a longer life. What we aren’t told is how to get started on the Mediterranean Diet. In the 1950s, Ancel Keys, a nutritionist, began what was called the Seven Countries which linked the eating patterns of Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia, Finland, Netherlands, Japan and the United States. The study found that those who followed a … Continue reading

Heart Healthy Vegetarian Dishes

Cooking for a mother who is on a low calorie, low cholesterol diet PLUS a husband who has diabetes and needs to eat foods that are low in fat, salt and sugar can be challenging to say the least. However, it is a task that my best friend has met full on… and succeeds at in ways that never cease to amaze me. The following recipes are ones she prepares for her family on a regular basis. I had a chance to sample them during my recent visit home. Because neither one of them calls for meat they were great … Continue reading

“Skinny B-tch”: Don’t Buy It!

PETA is coming out in full force these days. They claim that Brittney Spears’ problems are a result of her diet and now they’ve had two of their own publish what has been described as a “vegan manifesto” masquerading as a diet book. Veganism is a form of vegetarianism that rejects meat as well as any food that contains animal products such as milk, cheese, eggs, and honey. First of all, the authors of this book know nothing about weight loss. Their purpose in writing this book is not to help you lose weight but to mentally abuse you and … Continue reading

Roasted Veggie Enchiladas

My husband eats anything with cheese on it. It’s truly incredible. It’s as if the cheese somehow transforms the meal from “blech” to “oh la la.” I guess that’s the power of cheese. My husband also hates vegetables. In fact, he’s worse than the kids. He picks his peas out of the tuna noodle casserole while the kids happily munch on their food holistically with no sorting. So I was only too happy to find a recipe that included veggies covered in cheese. This meets the basic cheese requirement of my husband and yet still covers the basic ‘5 colors … Continue reading

Aimee’s Healthy Vegetarian Chili

Beans are an amazing food — and not just because of their “magical” powers! Beans have more antioxidants than superfoods like blueberries and cranberries. They’re also full of fiber; a one cup serving can give you half of the daily recommended amount of fiber. I love beans, and here’s one of my favorite bean-laden recipes: vegetarian chili. What you’ll need: 2 15 ounce cans of black beans (they’re rich in antioxidants that fight heart disease and cancer) 2 15 ounce cans of kidney beans (they’re full of thiamin, a vitamin that protects memory) 2 15 ounce cans of garbanzo beans … Continue reading
