Sunday Travel Funnies

How many times have you been pulled over by a police officer? What’s the most bizarre violation you’ve ever been ticketed for? It may be hard to top the one a New York man recently received. According to New York City’s traffic office, the Orange County resident ran a red light on Manhattan’s West Side… in his rowboat. Police say the man was issued a $50 traffic ticket in the mail for running the light in December. The notice included photographs of the vehicle and its license plate captured by traffic cameras that monitor Manhattan’s intersections. But, it turns out … Continue reading

Say So Long To Parking Tickets

How many times have you had to pay the price because you didn’t make it back to the meter before the parking attendant could slap a ticket on your windshield? The dreaded yellow slip (it’s yellow in my state)–it burns your eyes when you see it from across the street and it burns a hole in your wallet when it’s time to pay up. I despise getting parking tickets, which is why I was elated to hear that a company has come up with a new system that allows you to park-and-pay-by-cellphone. You pull up, dial a number, punch in … Continue reading

Speed Cameras Strike Again

Recently, I blogged about an Arizona woman who racked up 70 speeding tickets in less than five months. Her need for speed was caught on speed cameras mounted at intersections she frequented. She currently faces some $11,000 in fines and could have her license suspended. Her story is similar to that of a British motorist who suffered the same fate from a speed camera—but with one exception: the man who was caught on tape breaking various road rules retaliated by blowing up the camera. According to the British media, Craig Moore took his revenge on the camera, which had caught … Continue reading

Hawaii or a Plasma TV

I am a member of United Airlines frequent-flier program. I have been for more than 20 years and it has paid off. At least once a year I accrue enough miles to qualify for a free round trip ticket to Hawaii. But, today I received a letter asking me to reconsider using my frequent-flier miles for award travel. Instead, United is trying to entice me to redeem my miles for a 27-inch high definition TV. The letter details how United is becoming the latest carrier to allow frequent-flier program members to redeem their miles for a variety of items such … Continue reading

Travel Kiosks

You don’t have to be a business traveler to appreciate new innovations that make traveling more convenient. As a parent who often travels with a toddler, I was quite thrilled when I heard that Hilton Hotels is equipping their lobbies with kiosks that will allow guests to check in for flights, change or upgrade seats, and print boarding passes. The current kiosks allow guests to view hotel reservations, check in and out and view their hotel information. This new technology is considered an up-grade. The new capabilities were recently added to 37 of its properties in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, … Continue reading
